Tufts Recycling Essentials
Waste Stations (in high-traffic areas) should have a wall sign and 3 bins, with a label on each side:
 Trash
 Paper
Note: all recycling bins should have lids.
 Glass, Metal, & Plastic
>
Workstations should have a small blue paper bin
Kitchenettes should have at least one trash can and one Glass/Metal/Plastic bin.
Printing areas should have at least one paper bin.
High-waste areas may have unique recycling needs. Consult with users of the space and the Tufts
Recycling Coordinator to see what bins would be most appropriate.
Recycling Worksheet
1. Please spend some time in the next two weeks assessing the recycling system in your building (or
section of your building if you’re in a very large building). Eco-ambassadors from the same building
should divide up their building to cover as much ground as possible. Look for and record the
following things on your worksheet:
Replacement costs:
 Locations that are missing bins or signs
Slim Jim: $25
o Note: some buildings are not allowed to have
signs, these include:
Lid: $17

Trash cans not paired with recycling bins
Sticker: $1.50

Bins that need labels, lids, or ties to connect the lids

Areas with trash or recycling contamination
Apprehending the
bin thief: priceless
2. Use the attached spreadsheet to interview staff from around your office/building to assess their
knowledge of recycling practices and services. Find out if they know how to dispose of the following
items:

paper

electronics (computers, etc)

cardboard

batteries

all numbered plastics

cell phones

glass

fluorescent light bulbs (e.g. CFLs)

metal
3. Note barriers to recycling compliance (lack of knowledge, lack of receptacles, lack of interest, etc.):
4. Bonus: What are the names of your custodian(s)?
