FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES Suitable extinguishing media: Water. Specific hazards: At temperatures of >335oC can be emitted: ammonia, hydrogen chloride. The substances/groups of substances mentioned can be released if the product is involved in a fire. Special protective equipment: Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus. Further information: Product itself is non-combustible; fire extinguishing method of surrounding areas must be considered. In case of fire and/or explosion do not breathe fumes. Large quantities of extinguishing water containing dissolved product should be contained. Contaminated extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with official regulations. 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Personal precautions: Use personal protective clothing. Environmental precautions: Do not empty into drains. Methods for cleaning up or taking up: For residues: Pick up in dry form. Disposed of absorbed material in accordance with regulations. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE Handling: Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Protection against fire and explosion: No special precautions necessary. Storage: Segregate from alkalis and alkalising substances. Segregate from nitrates. Segregate from oxidants. Do not store with: Sodium Nitrate. Further information on storage conditions: Protect against moisture. 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION Components with workplace control parameters Refer to the current edition of HSE guidance note EH50 Occupational Exposure Limits (United Kingdom). 12125-02-9: ammonium chloride TWA value 10 mg/m3 (COSHH OEL (GB)) STEL value 20 mg/m3 (COSHH OEL (GB)) Personal protective equipment Respiratory protection: Ammonium Chloride Fine White U Breathing protection if dusts are formed. Particle filter EN 143 Type P1, low efficiency, (solid particles of inert substances). Page 2 of 5 Hand protection: Chemical resistant protective gloves (EN 374) Suitable materials also with prolonged, direct contact (Recommended: Protective index 6, corresponding >480 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374): Nitrile rubber (NBR) – 0.4mm coating thickness polyvinylchloride (PVC) – 0.7 mm coating thickness Supplementary note: The specifications are based on own tests, literature data and information of glove manufacturers or are derived from similar substances by analogy. Due to many conditions (e.g. temperature) it must be considered, that the practical usage of a chemical-protective glove in practice may be much shorter than the permeation time determined in accordance with EN 374. Manufacturers directions for use should be observed because of great diversity of types. Eye protection: Tightly fitting safety goggles (splash goggles) (EN 166) General safety and hygiene measures: Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. 9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Form: Crystalline, powder. Colour: White. Odour: Almost odourless. pH value: 4.7 (200 g/l, 25oC) Melting point: 520oC (3,450 kPa) Sublimation point: 338oC The substance/product decomposes. Self-ignition temperature: Not self-igniting. Vapour pressure: 66 mbar (250oC) Density: 1.53 g/cm3 (20oC) (ISO 2811-3) Bulk density: 600-900 kg/m3 (DIN/ISO 697) Solubility in water: 374 g/l (20oC) (DIN/ISO 976) 10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY Thermal decomposition: Ammonium Chloride Fine White U To avoid thermal decomposition, do not overheat. Page 3 of 5 Substances to avoid: Nitrites, nitrates, oxidising agent. Hazardous reactions: Violent reaction under influence of oxidising agents. Incompatible with bases. Reacts with nitrites. Hazardous decomposition products: Hydrogen chloride, ammonia. 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION LD50/oral/rat: 1,410 mg/kg Primary skin irritation/rabbit: non-irritant. Primary irritations of the mucous membrane/rabbit: Irritant. Exposure to high concentrations can cause eye, skin or respiratory irritations. Sensitisation: Skin sensitising effects were not observed in animal studies. Further information: In long-term studies in rats and mice in which the substance was given by drinking-water, a carcinogenic effect was not observed. 12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION Ecotoxicity Toxicity to fish: Cyprinus carpio/LC50 (96 h): 209 mg/l Literature data. Aquatic invertebrates: Daphnia magna/EC50 (48h): > 100 mg/l Literature data. Assessment of aquatic toxicity: Inhibition of degradation activity in activated sludge is not to be anticipated during correct introduction of low concentrations. The effect strongly depends on the pH-value. Persistence and degradability Assessment: Inorganic product which cannot be eliminated from water by biological purification processes. Additional information Other ecotoxicological: Do not release untreated into natural waters. The local regulations on waste-water treatment must be followed. 13. DISPOSAL The UK Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations (EP) and amendments should be noted (United Kingdom). Contaminated packaging: Ammonium Chloride Fine White U Contaminated packaging should be emptied as far as Page 4 of 5 possible; then it can be passed on for recycling after being thoroughly cleaned. 14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION Not classified as hazardous under transport regulations (ADR RID IMDG/GGV See ICAO/IATA) Further information: Specific national features of transport regulations must be observed. They are to be found in the shipping documents. 15. REGULATORY INFORMATION EC no: 235-186-4 As in directive 67/548/EEC Hazard symbol(s): Xn – Harmful. Risk phrase(s): R22 – Harmful if swallowed. R36 – Irritating to eyes. Safety phrase(s): S22 – Do not breathe dust. 16.
