third Wednesday of each month. All Sir Knights should try to attend and get involved.
The Fourth Degree
What is the purpose of the Fourth Degree? The degree is a patriotic degree; consequently, it clearly indicates we
should do everything possible to support our nation, such as supporting our veterans as well as our active military.
Also, there are many ways we can support patriotism, individually and as an assembly.
Also, the Color Corp is another important role of the Fourth Degree. It can be said it is largely ceremonial, but,
in reality, participation of the Color Corp at Confirmations, Ordinations and other Church Ceremonies and Masses
adds greatly to the beauty of the particular ceremony. You have to be a participant to feel the warmth of the
Congregation towards the Color Corp. Confirmants have remarked long after their confirmation of when they were
confirmed by the Bishop and those fellows with the funny hats were there. They do remember.

Navigator’s Report
Brother Sir Knights;
As we move towards end of this Columbian year, our
assembly has done wonderful things.
Since the last newsletter, our assembly has had a
Restaurant Fundraiser at the Chick-Fil-A and a South Jersey
Coupon Book Fundraiser. We are running a bus trip to see
“Joseph” in Lancaster on June 23 as well as more casino
trips and the 40 point football pool. Please support our
future fundraisers to help our assembly support the
charitable and patriotic activities during the year.
Our Assembly provided water and juice for those in
Veteran’s Haven during the year. We continue to support
veteran organizations such as the VFW, Wounded Warriors
and USO. Our Assembly will continue their annual
donation to the Military Chaplain Scholarship Fund.
Since I’m on the subject of veterans, please remember
our sponsored BINGO afternoon which is scheduled for
May 23th at 2:00pm at the Vineland Veteran’s Home. We
will probably car pool from the Parish Center between 12:30
and 12:45. I hope you can join us. Wives are welcome.
The Patriotic Americanism Awards sponsored by our
Assembly that will be presented to students attending Our
Lady of Hope School on June 5th and St. Teresa’s Regional
School in Runnemede on June 9th.
Memorial Day is a very busy one for our assembly.
There is a mass on Memorial Day (9 AM) at OLOH parish
which will feature our Color Corp and the boy scouts. Our
assembly and our Color Corp will participate in the
Gloucester Township Parade and the laying of a wreath at
Veteran’s Park in Gloucester Township. We hope as many
of our members as possible can attend these events to honor
those who gave their lives for our country.
Our Assembly will be holding elections for officers for
the 2015-16 Columbian Year at our June meeting. Our
nominating committee is preparing a slate for the elections.
If interested in running for office (including those officers
who want to run again) please contact Sir Knight Joe
Pettineo Sr (856-627-0628 or joepb455@comcast.net)
ASAP.
Our Color Corp is very active, attending viewings,
church events and are becoming extremely busy now during
Confirmation season. Our Bishop enjoys having the Color
Corp at the many events which he attends. We encourage
our membership to become members of the Color Corp. If
you want to join, our Color Corp Commander, PFN Barry
Start, will be happy to get you started. Remember that the
Color Corp is the most visible part of the Knights.
As this is the last newsletter that I will write as your
Navigator, I would like to thank all the Sir Knights of
Assembly 2843 for their hard work and support in the past
two years. I hope that we have continued to move forward
during this time and I entrust that you will show the same
support for the next Navigator.
God bless you all.
Vivat Jesus

Did You Know
The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by
Father Michael McGivney, a parish priest in New Haven,
Conn. With charity as its central commitment, the
organization has grown to 1.8 million members worldwide.
Last year, the Knights donated more than $170 million and
more than 70.5 million hours of service to charitable causes.
The pilgrimage is sponsored by the Archdiocese for the
Military Services, USA and the Knights of Columbus. It will
provide the opportunity for military members to travel to the
Marian shrine to rest, pray, find healing and connect with
other members of the military from across the world.
The Knights' sponsorship of the 2015 Warriors to Lourdes
Pilgrimage for the 57th Annual International Military
Pilgrimage is the latest chapter in the story of the
organization’s involvement in Lourdes, which first began
nearly 100 years ago. During the First World War, the
Knights were extremely active in serving American troops
abroad through the KofC Army Hut program. They even
established an official Knights of Columbus Army Hut in
Lourdes itself.
“The experiences of the Knights of Columbus in France
have been almost as various as are the emotions of man,” a
report from the period says. It continues: “The Knights have
attended the soldiers in their time of trouble; they have
helped them to make good use of their moments of leisure.
They have knelt by their side on the battlefield, and, when
no Priest was to be had, they have taken the dying lad’s last
message, encouraged him in making his act of contrition,
and, when all was over, they have closed his eyes. In times
of military stress they have taken food to soldiers in areas
which the commissary had been unable to reach; they have
made merry with them in hut and in club, joined in their
pastimes, found them good reading, comforted them in body
and in soul.”
With so many American troops stationed throughout
Europe, the Knights of Columbus organized a military
pilgrimage to the Marian shrine at Lourdes immediately
following the end of the WWI and published a Guide to
Lourdes after repeated requests from American pilgrims.
“Nothing that the boys have done,” the article reads, “has
given the Knights such satisfaction as has the visits of the
doughboys to the shrine of Our Lady at Lourdes. Some of us
had come six thousand miles, but if we had come from the
uppermost parts of the earth, the joy of these moments
would have made the journey and the fatigue seem as
nothing. The atmosphere was redolent with prayer and
praise and thanksgiving. “The Knights of Columbus,
animated by their core principles of charity, unity, fraternity
and patriotism, is honored to partner, for the third
consecutive year, with the Archdiocese for the Military
Services in sponsorship of this year’s Warriors to Lourdes
pilgrimage.

The Exemplification
The Fall Exemplication will take place on Sunday,
November 15, 2015 in Cherry Hill. Our Assembly should
plan to recruit Third Degree members to attend since the
event is in “our backyard.”
