Resolution 2002 - 14
A RESOLUTION BANNING PLASTIC STORE BAGS
WHEREAS, the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island, is a federally recognized Tribe of
Alaskan Natives having a common bond of living together on St. Paul Island, Alaska, and;
WHEREAS, the Tribal Government of St. Paul is the representative government for the
Aleut Community of St. Paul Island, and;
WHEREAS, the Tribal Government of St. Paul promotes, maintains, and represents
conservation and customary/cultural practices, awareness, preservation, self-regulation, and
self-determination, of, with, and for the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island, and;
WHEREAS, the Tribal Government of St. Paul recognizes the need to reduce the amount of
material going into the landfill and prevent trash from blowing all over the island, and;
WHEREAS, the Tribal Government of St. Paul understands that solutions exist through
decreasing what enters the waste stream and discontinuing the use of plastic grocery bags
prevents these harmful materials from entering the waste stream, and;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Tribal Council of the Tribal Government of
St. Paul hereby authorizes the President or his designee to work with the City of St. Paul,
retailers, Tribal members and citizens to banish plastic shopping bags from our community as
soon as an alternative reusable replacement can be made available, and;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, businesses, governments,
organizations and retailers have 45 days from the date this resolution is passed to comply
with the terms of this resolution by finding an alternative reusable replacement.
