Broken Arrow is where excellence is a tradition. Each month, the Board of Education is
proud to recognize honors, awards, and achievements of students and staff.
 The 2009-2010 BAPS “Volunteer of the Year” is Cherie Schnautz of Oak Crest.
The “Senior Volunteer of the Year” is Jim Birtell from Leisure Park. Deena
Sanders of the Country Lane 4th & 5Th Grade Center was recognized as the
“Volunteer Chairman of the Year”. Tina Getter, who volunteers at both
Centennial Middle School and North Intermediate High School, was honored for
reaching the 5,000 hour mark for volunteer hours. Volunteers congratulated for
reaching the 1,000 hour volunteer mark for volunteer hours included Judy King
(CL 45), Sandi Grizzle (Westwood), Renae Ferguson (Wolf Creek and Oliver),
Karen Lomeli (Leisure Park), Robin Berry (Leisure Park), and Stephene Turner
(Oak Crest).
 Jeremy Barnes, a Broken Arrow Senior, won the 2010 Class 6A Lincoln Douglas
Debate State Championship.
 Childers Middle School Advanced Band won the sweepstakes award at the
Heartland Music Fest in Oklahoma City. The Advanced Band and Intermediate
Band were both awarded superior ratings and a trophy for outstanding
achievement at this competition. Students receiving outstanding musician
trophies for solos included David Reck, Katy Newton, Sarah Cox, and McKenzie
Barnes.
 BAHS Yearbook (Arrow Life) has been recognized for excellence and featured in
the 2010 “Gotcha Covered Look Book Volume 8” published annually by Jostens.
This book is used worldwide by yearbook advisors seeking the best ideas and
themes, and inspiration.
 Broken Arrow High School senior Jeremy Barnes won the 2010 Class 6A
Lincoln-Douglas Debate Champion. Barnes bested 18 other state qualifiers at the
State Debate Championships held at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
 BAHS student Ravynn Teague has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National
American Miss Oklahoma Pageant to be held June 11-13 in Tula.
 BAHS student Molly Priebe was named a student winner for band in the 2010
State Superintendent’s Awards for Arts Excellence.
 Wolf Creek Principal Ron Beckwith was named the winner of the Broken Arrow
PTA Council’s “Philip Tucker Principal Award” for his support of PTA at Wolf
Creek and across the district.
 Oklahoma Magazine chose BAHS student Vincent Landino as one of the
magazine’s 2010 outstanding seniors.
 BAHS students Sarah Crandell, Danielle Crandell, Ryan Shaner, and Stuart Gray,
placed 1st in the state of Oklahoma in the HOSA Bowl.
 The North Intermediate High School Key Club has been named the First Place
winner in the high school category of the food drive held by the Community Food
Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
 Broken Arrow High School was the big winner in the Oklahoma Coaches
Association Region 7 athletic achievement awards for 2009-2010 with a student






athlete of the year award and four coach of the year honors. BAHS softball
shortstop Megan Sullivan was voted the OCA Region 7 Female Athlete of the
Year. Track coach Scott Morgan, Boys basketball coach Rusty Stecker, Wrestling
coach Shawn Jones, and Boys Golf coach Bo Belcher, were all named the Region
7 Coach of the Year in their respective sport.
BAPS Junior High Boys Track Team won the Frontier Valley Conference Track
Meet. Paul Allison is the Head Coach.
BA 9th Grade Boys Track Team won the Frontier Valley Conference Track Meet.
Scott Morgan is the Head Coach.
The Oklahoma School Public Relations Association (OKSPRA) has honored the
Broken Arrow Public Schools Communications Department with statewide
awards for the BAPS Communications Department’s efforts in connection with
the successful 2009 Broken Arrow School Bond Election. BAPS was recognized
with the “Award of Excellence” for a one-time project. OKSPRA honored Chief
Communications Officer Keith Isbell and BAPS webmaster Adam J. Foreman for
their work in communicating the district’s bond issue to the public. BAPS also
received the “Award of Excellence” in the video-audio program category.
OKSPRA honored Isbell and Gordon Moeller of the district’s video productions
group for the video the two produced that provided information about the bond
issue. Each year, an independent group of judges determines the best
communications works and projects among public school districts and
CareerTechs in Oklahoma. An Award of Excellence means the entry is the
absolute best in that category.
Five Broken Arrow High School students earned a certificate signed by Governor
Brad Henry and sponsored by the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of
Science and Technology (OCAST) for the students’ success in science. Broken
Arrow High School Science Department Chair, Laura Achhireddy said the BAHS
Science Department selected the following five outstanding seniors for this
special recognition: Lauren Tull (physics and chemistry), Morgan Johnson
(astronomy), Matthew Bryce Roberts (physiology), Josh Padawer (Advanced
Placement environmental science), and Molly Priebe (Advanced Placement
environment science).
Broken Arrow High School students Keana Dorshorst and Kevin Copeland will
represent BAHS and all of Oklahoma at the National Debate Tournament in June
after being named “Outstanding Representatives” in Student Congress at the
Regional Tournament in Sapulpa.
The Senior High Wind Bands participated in the "Lone Star Showcase of Music"
in the Dallas area while the North and South Intermediate Bands participated in
the “Pride Classic in Springfield, Missouri. The following are the results from

BAHS Girls’ Tennis team won the Regional championship in Tulsa. Jodi Blackim of
BAHS won first place in No.1 Singles. Courtney Coon won first place in No. 2 Singles.
Peyton Bergmann/Erica Miller won first place in No. 1 Doubles. Annie Best/Katie
Sommers won second place in No. 2 Doubles.
