The SPSS exists to identify those ponies, irrespective of type or breeding, who
offer true sporting talent and will provide the UK with top class Dressage, Event
and Showjumping stock capable of competing successfully with our ‘ever
improving’ competitors from other countries. We are doing this using the ‘tried
and tested’ method of grading both mares and stallions as potential breeding
stock specifically for sport rather than any other criteria.

(Born 2008; may be shown with or without their dam)
Not likely to exceed 148 cms at maturity.
Likely to mature above 148 cm but no more than 158 cm.
Mares likely to breed a Sports Pony.
(Born in 2004 or before).
Note that mares do not have to be in foal or have a foal at foot.

(Fillies born 2005, 2006 or 2007)
Not likely to exceed 148 cms at maturity.
Likely to mature above 148 cm but no more than 158 cm.
Sports Pony Male Youngstock
(Colts born 2006 and 2007; Geldings born 2005, 2006 or 2007)
Not likely to exceed 148 cms at maturity.
Likely to mature above 148 cm but no more than 158 cm.
Overall Championship to be contested by winner and 2nd placed from each class
(provided that they have reached 1st Premium standard).
Entry Fee for Classes 1-4 is £15 SPSS members and £20 non-members.
Prizes:
Classes 1-4: 1st £20; 2nd £15; 3rd £10
Champion £30 and Reserve Champion £20
Premium certificates will be awarded to all entrants receiving a sufficiently high average
score (ie 3rd Premium to an average score of 7.0 to 7.49; 2nd Premium to an average
score of 7.5 to 7.99 and a 1st Premium to an average score of 8.0 or above).
Classes will not start before 1 pm. Approximate class times will be available on
www.spss.org.uk by the 16th October or by phone from 01558 685693 on 16th October
between 7pm and 9pm only.
Sections will be scored separately but then combined for a final walk around before class
prizes are awarded.

RULES OF ENTRY
1
Eligibility
In general, these classes are open to:
(1)
British bred mares, fillies, colts and geldings with papers issued by a stud book passport issuing
organisation (PIO) listed with DEFRA
(2)
British bred mares, fillies, colts and geldings with papers from a foreign stud book that have been overstamped by a stud book PIO listed with DEFRA
(3)
British bred foals eligible for registration and pedigree papers from:
(a)
a stud book PIO listed with DEFRA
(b)
a foreign stud book which can be over-stamped by a stud book PIO listed with DEFRA
(4)
Imported mares, fillies and colts with papers from a foreign stud book that have been over-stamped by a
stud book PIO listed with DEFRA
(5)
Imported mares, fillies and colts with papers from a foreign mother stud book and whose importation into
the UK has been notified to its appropriate stud book PIO listed with DEFRA
All entries must be accompanied by a photocopy of the pony/horse’s papers (or the dam’s papers and
the 2007 covering certificate in the case of foals that do not have their own passport). Passports
should accompany the ponies/horses to the show and be available for the judge to inspect if required.

Foals (Class 1)
Foals must be shown in a leather head collar and, unless of pure-bred Mountain and Moorland, must be shown
with a plaited mane if the mane is long enough. Foals will be shown loose in Class 1 but foals qualifying for the
Championship will be judged in hand for that championship. Dams of any foals entered need not be entered in the
mare class as these are judged separately. Weaned foals may attend without their dam.

Mares (Class 2)
Mares do not have to be in foal or have a foal at foot but if they have a foal then they may be accompanied by it
in the class. They will be judged one at a time, in-hand on the triangle then loose and must be shown plaited
(unless pure-bred Mountain & Moorland in which case may be shown unplaited – although a running plait or
looped long plaits are preferred) and in a snaffle bridle (noseband optional). Foals accompanying any of the
broodmares need not be entered in the foal class.

Youngstock (Classes 3 and 4)
Yearlings, 2 and 3 year olds will be judged one at a time, in-hand on the triangle then loose. They must be shown
plaited (unless pure Mountain & Moorland in which case may be shown unplaited – although a running plait or
looped long plaits are preferred) and snaffle bridles are allowed for all and compulsory for 2 and 3 year olds.

Splitting and Combining Classes
The Organisers reserve the right to split, combine or cancel any classes should entry numbers require. Where
classes have been split into sections, each section will be scored separately then the combined class will re-enter
the ring for the final judging and allocation of rosettes and prize money.

Handler Turnout
It is essential that the handler gives the animal being shown the best possible chance of moving forward as freely
as possible. The handler should therefore be someone able to move well enough to show off its movement to the
best advantage. To enable this to happen, handlers should be dressed neatly but comfortably in such a way as to
be able to show their animals at speed. White tops and trousers are preferred and running shoes are acceptable.
Whips may be carried. Protective hats are recommended.

Handler’s assistant
During the pony’s individual show ONLY , the handler may use an assistant to follow behind the animal with a whip
but excessive whip cracking is not allowed in consideration of the other exhibitors.

Head/Bridle Numbers
Exhibitors should provide their own head/bridle numbers (preferably one for each side) for each of their animals
and these should be worn at all times that the animal is in front of the judges or in the collecting ring. Head
numbers will NOT be available from the Organisers on the day – but if you are unable to get head numbers, ‘old
fashioned’ competitor numbers will be provided and may be worn by the handler instead.

Lunging
Lunging of exhibits is only allowed one at a time in the dedicated lunging ring.

Dangerous behaviour of exhibits
If any animal taking part is deemed by the organisers, judges or stewards to be at any time behaving in such a
way as to endanger the safety of any person, animal or property or any part of the venue where the show is being
held, including all stabling areas, working in arenas, horsebox parks and public areas, the Organisers reserve the
right to disqualify the animal from competition and require the exhibitor, or his or her representatives to remove
the animal from the venue immediately. In the event of such disqualification, any entry fees, charges, premiums
and awards will be forfeited.

Incivility
Any act of discourtesy or disobedience to any judge, steward or other official on the part of the owner, groom,
rider, trainer or agent of any animal will at the discretion of the Organisers render that animal eligible for
disqualification, in which case any entry fees, charges, premiums and awards will be forfeited.

Stabling
Only very limited stabling is available at the venue itself, but a list of local addresses that may have vacant
boxes for hire is available from Heart of England Equestrian (Tel 01889 505048). All stabling must be booked and
paid for directly with the provider not through the SPSS.

Fire precautions
Exhibitors are asked to read carefully and observe the rules and regulations concerning the precautions at the
venue and comply with any rules.

Health and safety
Exhibitors must adhere to all relevant Health and Safety legislation, policies and guidelines for the venue at all
times and not put themselves or anyone else at risk. Exhibitors, spectators and all other persons should bear in
mind that these classes are primarily for young animals and breeding stock and that all equines, especially young
ones, can be easily frightened and can be dangerous. Members of the public are requested to keep clear of all
equine areas and to avoid behaviour that might frighten them. Children must be supervised by parents/guardians
at all times.

Infringement of rules of conduct
Infringements of rules of conduct must be reported to the relevant steward in the first instance for action by the
Organisers.

Insurance
All owners and competitors are personally responsible for damages to third persons caused by themselves, their
employees, their agents or their horses. It is a requirement that they have in force current third-party insurance
providing full coverage for participation at this show.

Declining of entries
The Organisers may, at their absolute discretion, decline any entry, or exclude or remove any person or animal
from any event without being required to assign any reason or being liable for any compensation.

Data Protection Act
Exhibitors should note that details of their names and addresses and the names and breeding details of their
animals are stored electronically. As a DEFRA-approved studbook PIO, the SPSS has undertake to provide
voluntary breeding date to the National Equine Database and such details may therefore be made available to NED
in due course. The SPSS is authorised to process personal data under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Rule changes
The Organisers reserve the right to change any of the rules and regulations without notice should circumstances
warrant.

Cancellation
The Organisers reserve the right to cancel the event or change the venue and/or date for whatever reason. Entries
will be transferred to any new venue / date but exhibitors will not be compensated or have their entry moneys and
other related costs refunded to them if the replacement venue is not convenient for them.

General
Neither the Organisers nor the Venue nor any of their agents or officials or employees accept responsibility for any
loss or injury to horses, riders, spectators vehicles or property during the show, or consequent to attending the
show howsoever incurred. Each exhibitor will be considered responsible for the attendants in charge of his/her
animals and for any other employees or agents for the consequences of any infringement by such persons of these
rules and regulations.
