Things that concern us - Navan Landfill Expansion Project The fourth and final Open House for Navan Landfill Expansion Project was held on February 15, 2007. Three members of the BCA Executive, Councillor Rainer Bloess and a number of Blackburn Hamlet residents attended this last Open House. There is concern about the expansion project that will see the Navan Landfill grow bigger and higher and remain open until after 2020 instead of closing in 2011. The purpose of this Open House was to provide an opportunity to review the evaluation of the four alternatives for the expansion leading to the selection of a preferred alternative. For a number of the people present, including those representing the BCA as well as the Notre Dame des Champ Community Association and the Friends of Mer Blue, expressed dismay that there was one alternative not considered. This one alternative was to close the Navan Landfill in 2011 as currently approved. Concerns are coming from Blackburn Residents and several surrounding communities about what this mean to the health of the local community, not to mention the likely increase in airborne irritants and potential smells. Visual pollution of the areas adjacent to the dump expansion are likely to be significant. The Friends of Mer Bleu will be hosting another Open Community Meeting on April 20th at 7:00pm at the Notre-Dames-Des-Champs Community centre (3659 Navan Road (north side, west of Mer Bleue). All are welcome. If you are concerned about your community and those areas surrounding Blackburn then please utilize the information below to inform yourself regarding this issue.
