Postsecondary Access Counselor job description

Post Secondary Access Counselor Job Description
Description:
The Met is hiring a Post Secondary Access Counselor to support the school’s mission to
ensure that every student graduates high school with a appropriate postsecondary plan.
Counselors will work across two buildings on the Public Street campus of The Met. Their
primary caseload will be 11th and 12th grade students and their advisors. The job will be a
combination of teacher coaching and capacity-building and individual and group work
with students. Counselors will be responsible for disseminating quality resources advisors
and students can use for their postsecondary search, and to lay out a structured timeline of
support and training so that advisors can guide their students through the process of
postsecondary exploration, application, and selection. Counselors will also meet
individually with students at important stages in the process: early exploration; finalizing
applications; applying for financial aid. In addition, counselors will collaborate with
advisors to plan group activities to inform and educate students about various aspects of
the postsecondary process. Counselors will have the secondary responsibility to work
with 9th and 10th grade advisors, to help expose their students to postsecondary options
early in their high school career. It is important to emphasize the postsecondary nature of
the job description. While we want all students to apply to college and have traditional
college options available to them, we also place high priority on students have parallel
pathways in place following graduation. These may include certification programs, jobtraining programs, or blended classroom and work experiences (e.g. Year Up).
The candidates selected will work with The Met leadership to finalize the structure of the
position. Possibilities include working across a pair of campuses with both 11th and 12th
grade, or specializing with one grade across all four campuses. The candidates and
leadership team will assess the relative merits of various structures, weighed against the
logistical realities of working with multiple campuses, in order to finalize a structure
before the end of the academic year.
Responsibilities include:
 Developing a structured timeline and sequence of postsecondary access
benchmarks for 11th and 12th grade. This will form the basis for teacher coaching

postsecondary access timeline.
 Meeting on a regular basis with advisors, both individually and as a group, to
support and train them for each benchmark on the timeline.

around postsecondary access
 Meeting with students individually at important stages in the timeline.
