RED SCARF PROJECT
December 1st, 2015 is World’s Aids Day. There is still
misinformation and fear regarding this disease. Innocent
people have this disease and fear to get treatment because
of the stigma. Karyn Cooper from the AIDS Committee of
Simcoe County has asked the CWL and other churches if we
would help. Karyn would like 350 knitted/crochet red
scarves wrap around lamp post and trees around
Bracebridge during the first week of Dec. Each scarf has an
information card attached. Community members can take
a scarf as they come upon them. They have to be 6” X 60”.
For more info call Ghislaine 705-394-5665 or Linda Healy
705-645-9703. If you do not knit you can help by dropping
red wool in the box at back of church or put money in an
envelope, clearly mark “Red Scarf” and drop in collection
basket. Thank you for helping with this project.
A SOUL THAT MAGNIFIES THE LORD
St. Augustine explained that although being the Mother of the Saviour
bestows on the Blessed Virgin Mary a great privilege, her faithfulness is
something even more noteworthy. Augustine wrote, “We must not think
that blessedness lay in bodily relationship”; instead he concluded, “Mary
is blessed because she’ heard the word of God and kept it. (Luke
11:28) After Elizabeth’s Spirit-directed words the Blessed Virgin Mary
now speaks. While Elizabeth has spoken her words to and about the
Blessed Virgin Mary and her child. The Blessed Virgin Mary now turns
the attention to God our Lord and the various things he is doing and will
do for the Blessed Virgin Mary, for the poor and needy, for the proud
and wealthy and for Israel. How does the Blessed Virgin Mary respond
to all these accolades of Elizabeth? With HUMILITY, She turns all the
attention back to God, recognizing Him as the true source of all these
blessings in her life. She says, “MY SOUL MAGNIFIES THE LORD,
AND MY SPIRIT REJOICES IN GOD MY SAVIOUR”. (Luke 1:46-47)
The Blessed Virgin Mary’s hymn-like response to Elizabeth’s praise
sheds additional light on the Blessed Virgin Mary’s interior life. The
verses of Luke (1:46-55) are commonly known as THE MAGNIFICAT.
The Blessed Virgin Mary needs God to be her Saviour, as all humans
do. However this does not imply that she has committed any sin. The
Blessed Virgin Mary “the one who has been graced” and the “most
blessed of women” was saved by being prevented from falling into sin
by her Immaculate Conception. “HENCE FORTH ALL GENERATIONS
WILL CALL ME BLESSED” (Luke 1:48). FOR HE WHO IS MIGHTY
HAS DONE GREAT THINGS FOR ME (Luke: 49). The Blessed Virgin
Mary recognizes her lowliness and her Son underscores that all she
has comes from God’s grace. She seeks not to exalt herself but to
magnify the Lord. It is logical to conclude that just as Elizabeth blessed
the Blessed Virgin Mary because the Son of God has been conceived in
her womb, so will all generations bless her for the same reason. This
verse explains the common title, “Blessed Virgin Mary” being addressed
to her throughout the history of the Church. BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
AND ISRAEL-In the first part of the Magnificat we see how the Blessed
Virgin Mary focuses on the blessings God has bestowed on her
personally – how the Lord has looked upon her lowliness and has done
great things for her (1: 46-50). In the second half the Blessed Virgin
Mary praises God for what he is doing for all of Israel – showing his
mercy on his people, exalting all the lowly and rescuing them from their
afflictions (1:51-55). The relationship between the two halves of the
Blessed Virgin Mary’s song is clear. The way God is working in the
Blessed Virgin Mary’s life anticipates the saving deeds he will do for all
of Israel. In the Magnificat the Blessed Virgin Mary proclaims not only
the good things God is doing in her own life but Good News for all
God’s people. Taken from: Walking with Mary by Edward Sri and Mary by Fr. Mitch Pacwa
