The University Church of St Mary the Virgin is situated on Oxford’s High Street
and has been central to University life since the early 13c. The clock tower is the
tallest building in the City and it is one of England’s most visited and historically
important churches. More than 300,000 people per year visit as tourists and
pilgrims
Beard is one of the preferred contractors for The University of Oxford and was
chosen to undertake the complex £3m restoration of the Church. Extensive
works have taken place both externally to the stone work, and internally to
restore the interior, the windows, memorials, the 15th century choir stalls and
replace the M&E services. The building is Grade 1 listed and the church has been
a live occupied site for the duration of the 10 month contract.
Steve Lambourne, Site Manager, will give a talk in the newly refurbished Old
Library, which will have been completed, followed by a tour of the site.
Networking drinks will take place at All Bar One afterwards.
Please ensure that sensible footwear is worn for this construction site visit. Hi vis
vests and hard hats will be provided.
