I.
POSITION SUMMARY: The RRT is responsible for providing basic and advanced respiratory
services to infant, pediatric, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. The RRT performs routine
respiratory clinical care including medication administration, arterial puncture, breathing exercises and
retraining, initiation and monitoring of oxygen therapy, impedance apnea monitors and pulse
oximeters. In addition, the RRT performs critical care duties including the initiation of, management,
and discontinuation of mechanical ventilation, endotracheal intubation, airway care and attendance at
announced cardiopulmonary and trauma resuscitations dependent upon the RRT level of professional
development attained. May perform routine and emergency care for age categories infant, child,
adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
II.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education
1. Graduate of a JRCRTE approved Respiratory Care Program with a minimum of an
Associate’s degree with a Bachelor’s degree desired.
B. Experience
1. RRT I includes 0-2 Years of Respiratory Care experience in an acute care facility
2. RRT II includes at least 2 years Respiratory Care experience in an acute care facility
3. RRT III includes greater than 4 years Respiratory Care experience in an acute care facility
and includes at least 1 year at Floyd.
C. Licensure/Certification
1. Registered (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
2. Licensure by the State of Georgia as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
3. BCLS, ACLS, PALS (ACLS and PALS certification prior to moving to next level and within
1 year of employment)
D. Interpersonal requirements
1. Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills, demonstrates a sincere
commitment to customer service.
2. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, and physicians regarding
procedures.
3. Must be able to handle a multitude of tasks in a fast-paced environment.
4. Must be able to handle emergency situations in a calm, professional manner.
5. Must be self-motivated and use available work time wisely.

6. Actively involved in continuing education development for personnel/professional growth
as exhibited by reviewing policies and procedures and emphasizing and reviewing quality
assurance standards.

Frequent exposure to communicable disease (airborne, bloodborne and contact), toxic

VIII.
Minimum Standard of Performance
A. The Therapist participates in activities, which assure high quality patient care.
1. Receives report regarding progress of all patients receiving therapy
2. Interacts with all members of the health care team to assure efficient problem
resolution
3. Assess need for and initiates oxygen therapy, assessing efficacy and
appropriateness through use of physical assessment, Spo2 and arterial blood
gas sampling and interaction.
4. Works closely with nurses and physicians to aid with all aspects of patient care.
5. Maintains Cerner computer notebooks according to departmental policy and
procedure.
6. Reviews patient’s charts and notes any changes in therapy before each
procedure; documents procedures neatly and completely.
7. Notifies supervisor and nursing personnel of any adverse reactions to therapy
of practice.
8. Seeks guidance and direction as necessary for performance of duties.
9. Strives to accommodate changing needs of the department while maintaining
high productivity, availability, and efficient use of physical resources and
supplies.
10. Performs age specific care for age categories: infant, child, adolescent, adult,
and geriatric populations.
11. Reviews, collects, and evaluates pertinent and relevant clinical data
12. Performs basic therapeutic procedures for infant, child, adult, and geriatric
patients

The Respiratory Therapist I is able to apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients and
clients. The Respiratory Therapist I will recognize the need for effective interpersonal

professional growth.
RRT I Entry Level Therapist (0-2 years experience Acute Care Facility)

the Respiratory Care Division. The Respiratory Therapist II uses their experience and
increased knowledge base to guide others in problem solving, time management, and
prioritization.

RRT II and RRT III are eligible for bonus of up to $750 at the time they pass the first
one of the following Specialty Credentials. The exam fee will be reimbursed if you pass the exam. Any
prep course pre approved prior to taking will also be reimbursed even if you do not pass the exam.
