GUIDED PRACTICE:

Day One:

Mini Lesson: The students will start off reading a book about sunny weather. They will get to feel the giant yellow stuffed sun. The students will be asked to answer the question “ What kind of weather did we just read about”. They will answer by using concrete objects or picture symbols. The students will then be told that we are going to continue to learn about the sun in two groups! The students will also start tracking the weather by using picture symbols.

Group One: The students will be coloring a picture of a sunny day. They will talk about what kind of clothes that you wear on a sunny warm day ( flip flops, t shirt, shorts, capris ect) The students will then go to the smartboard to dress a man with summer clothes. They will then be asked if they man they dressed would be comfortable in a day like the picture they just colored ( sunny and warm). They will answer yes or no.

Group Two:

The students will be working on a worksheet that has the word sun on it with a picture symbol. They will be working on choosing pictures and objects that go with a sunny day. They will be pulling from prior knowledge and what they have read in the book. The students will be asked between two pictures or objects what should go with the sunny day. For example, would scarf go in the winter pile or would the bathing suit?

Day Two:

Mini Lesson: The students will start off reading a book about cloudy/rainy weather. They will get to feel the cotton clouds and see the shiny raindrops. The students will be asked to answer the question “ What kind of weather did we just read about”. They will answer by using concrete objects or picture symbols.

They will talk about what kind of clothes you need to wear when it is raining. The students will then be told that we are going to continue to learn about the rain/clouds in two groups!

Group One: The students will be coloring a picture of a cloudy/rainy day. They will talk about what kind of clothes that you wear on a rainy cold day ( long sleeves, pants, raincoat, rain boots ect) The students will then go to the smartboard to dress a man rainy cold weather clothes. They will then be asked if they man they dressed would be comfortable in a day like the picture they just colored ( cold and rainy). They will answer yes or no.

Group Two:

The students will be working on a worksheet that has the words rainy and cloudy on it with a picture symbol. They will be working on choosing pictures and objects that go with a rainy and cloudy day. They will be pulling from prior knowledge and what they have read in the book. The students will be asked between two pictures or objects what should go with the rainy and cloudy day. For example, would an umbrella or sunglasses go on the picture of a rainy/cloudy day?

Day Three:

Mini Lesson: The students are going to review sunny and rainy by dressing the man on the smartboard.

They will touch the sun and then find the sunny clothes for their man. They will then feel the clouds and the rain so that they can find the rainy day clothes for their man. The students will then talk about the weather that they are tracking. The students will look at the data that they have collected over the past week. They will see how many sunny days they had and how many rainy/cloudy days they had.

Group One:

Students will listen to a story about the weather for a week. The students will practice tracking the weather on their own graphic organizers. They will help their partner count the data and conclude whether the week was mostly sunny or if it was mostly rainy.

Group Two:

Students will review sunny and rainy by creating a tactile picture of sunny and a tactile picture of rainy.

They will review what type of clothes they need to wear for each day. They will paste picture symbols of those clothes onto the picture.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:

SUMMARY/CLOSURE/ASSESSMENT:

The student’s work will be used to record the level of prompt necessary for the students to complete the task. Data will also be collected throughout the guided practice to track the students progress on learning the vocabulary words and their participation level with the inquiry based science experiment.
