Science, Culture and Technology in Everyday Life Guidelines for Group Presentations For this class, each student is required to participate in one group presentation on a topic decided by consensus within the group, and of relevance to this class. Each group will consist of 3-4 people, and presentations will begin on the Thursday of the Fifth Week of the term, and continue on until all groups have presented. (The presentation order will be randomly selected in class). I will set aside some time at the end of class on Thursdays during the second, third and fourth week of class for you to meet as a group, but it is also recommended that you meet outside of class as well. Your grade on these presentations will be a group grade, based on the overall clarity and organization of the entire presentation as a whole. Requirements for the group giving the presentation: - Each group’s presentation should be between 30-40 minutes in length (points will be deducted for shorter presentations). We will also allow for 15-20 minute of discussion after the main presentation. - Each person belonging to the group must participate in the presentation (you cannot have just one or two people talk during the entire presentation). - Some type or types of audiovisual supportive material must accompany the presentation. This may be a handout, poster, overhead transparencies, a PowerPoint presentation, or video clips. (If you plan to use PowerPoint or show a video clip you must let me know at least a week in advance, so I can make sure the equipment is available). - You must meet with me in my office as a group at least one week prior to your presentation. During this meeting, you must bring in a brief outline of your presentation. - After the presentations, each member of the group will be asked to rank the participation of other members in their group (this will be kept confidential). This will be taken into consideration if there is a consensus among all the participants that one or more of the participants did not participate equally in the planning, organization and presentation. Strongly recommended for the group: - It is strongly recommended that each group practice their presentation in advance to the actual presentation. You may wish to have at least one or two friends watch your sample presentation and evaluate it according to the criteria in the attached evaluation form. Requirements for the audience: - Each audience member is required to: 1) evaluate the group’s performance (evaluation sheets will be passed out in class); 2) participate in the discussion afterwards. Remember to write down questions you have during the presentation, so we can discuss them afterwards.
