Doctoral Students: Application for an
Extension to Final Thesis Submission Date

Use this form if you require an extension to the final submission date for your thesis. This form must
be completed if you wish to submit your thesis on a date later than 4 FTE (4 years as a full-time
student).
There are 2 sections to this form to be completed before it is submitted to the Postgraduate Office. Please
submit to completed form as an email attachment (postgraduate-office@canterbury.ac.nz). The first section
is to be completed by the student and the second section by the student’s senior supervisor
Section 1 – to be completed by the student
Before applying for an extension please first discuss the matter with your supervisors.
Your application for an extension will be considered by the Dean of Postgraduate Research in consultation
with your supervisors. You will be notified on the outcome of your request by the Postgraduate Office as
soon as possible.
You must ensure that your enrolment is kept up-to-date - you will need to enrol on your thesis anniversary
date, regardless of any extension granted. Please note that if you are granted an extension to your
thesis submission date you will be liable for any additional fees for the period of the extension – you
will need to re-enrol on your enrolment anniversary date for a period of 3, 6, 9 or 12 months. If you
submit your thesis before the date by which your fees expire you will receive a refund for any full months of
fees paid but unused.
Granting of an academic extension does not also create an extension to any scholarship you may receive.
Application for extensions of scholarships must be made separately to the scholarship granting agency.
