Library Education Needs Assessment Continuing Education Survey:
CE Providers and Library Education Programs in California
September 15, 2001
by
Cindy Mediavilla
Introduction
The attached data meet the third requirement of a research study commissioned by the
Stanford-California State Library Institute on 21st Century Librarianship. The study, funded
through a Library Services and Technology Act grant awarded to the Institute, InfoPeople and
the California Library Association (CLA), is part of a larger project assessing the continuing
education (CE) needs of California librarians and library workers. As a result of this research a
list of library CE providers and institutions awarding library degrees in California is presented.
Research Methodology
The attached list of library CE providers was compiled primarily by visiting websites and
by monitoring continuing education opportunities posted on CLA’s statewide listserv CALIX.
To make the study more manageable, only events occurring in 2001 are included.
Several sponsors of CE events are not listed here. Library systems (e.g., Black Gold,
MCLS, etc.) were not surveyed because it was assumed they all provide training opportunities
for their members. Nor were the CE activities of individual library jurisdictions (e.g., University
of California; Los Angeles Public Library; etc.) compiled as their workshops tend to be restricted
to employees only. Also missing is the American Library Association conference, which was
held in San Francisco this year. Although national conferences provide extraordinary learning
opportunities, they occur so rarely in California that it was deemed inappropriate to include them
on this list. In addition, the offerings of the more “generic” CE providers, such as The Learning
Annex and UC Extension, do not appear as their courses are not targeted specifically to library
staff.
Finally, even though they are not listed here, it is important to remember that several
freelance consultants also provide training to library groups. Yolanda Cuesta, Gail McGovern,
Rhea Rubin, Joan Frye Williams, and Cindy Mediavilla are but a handful of library experts in
this state who are willing and qualified to lead workshops on any number of professional topics.
Findings
A total 36 California library continuing education providers were identified (within the
parameters outlined above). Not only do agencies such as InfoPeople and UCLA’s Department
of Information Studies offer an array of workshops throughout the year, but other organizations
also regularly provide half- and full-day CE events. Among the most active groups are the
American Society of Indexers, California Academic and Research Librarians (CARL), and
Special Libraries Association (SLA). Special interest groups or regional chapters of these and
other organizations all sponsor workshops and/or annual conferences in California. Members of
the sponsoring organizations usually pay lower registration fees than non-members. However,
few groups award continuing education units (CEUs) or any other type of credit for attending
their events. Although the local library community has a rich assortment of CE opportunities
from which to choose, the most common training theme this past year was technology.
Three universities offer master’s degrees in either library and information science or
information and management systems. Furthermore, six universities award library media teacher
credentials. Fifteen colleges offer library technology/media technician degrees or certificates.
The List
A compilation of library CE providers statewide is attached, followed by three separate
lists of educational institutions in California offering various library degrees. Contact
information--including name, telephone number, email address, and website--is listed for all
groups. The titles of individual programs and training sessions, as well as registration fees, are
noted when known. The status of whether CEUs are awarded is also noted when known.
Annual conferences are listed separately from workshops. It is hoped that this survey will
provide a workable overview of the many CE opportunities available to librarians and library
staff in California.
