Frank Fredrick Foster, Jr. Passed away suddenly on July 01, 2003, at his residence in
Brockville, ON, in his 47th year. He was the son of Frank and Avis Foster of Picton, ON.
Frank was born in St. John's, NFLD on August 07, 1956. When he was 6 weeks old, he
travelled with his parents to Whitehorse, Yukon. At the age of 3 years, the family moved
to Picton, ON. There, Frank grew up and graduated from Prince Edward Collegiate
Institute. After graduating High School, Frank was accepted into the Worl d Youth
Organization as an exchange student, travelling to South America where he worked for 3
months. On return from South America, Frank attended Ryerson University in Toronto
and obtained a degree in Motion Picture Photography and Applied Arts. Af ter more time
travelling to Israel and different parts of Europe, he worked for a number of years in the
film industry, both in Toronto and Vancouver. Frank then decided to change careers. He
attended Queen's University in Kingston, ON and received h is Bachelor of Education
degree. He leaves to mourn his loss, his parents, a daughter (Alice) Toronto, ON, sisters
Beverly (Ted) Bath, ON, Kathryn (Bob) Sharbot Lake, ON, Wendy, Verona, ON, and
brother Bill (Katie), Toronto, ON, nieces and nephews, a nd numerous cousins and
friends. Frank was well liked by all who knew him. He will be missed.

McALPINE, Barnelle ("Bonnie") Alice (nee Chatham) For 57 years the beloved wife of
Lieut. Gen. (ret'd) Duncan Alastair McAlpine of Kingston, mother of Lynn (Montreal),
Bruce (Toronto), Keith (Chicago) and Craig (Montreal), grandmother of six, and gre at
grandmother of two, passed away peacefully at home on October 2, 2003 after a heroic
struggle with cancer. Surrounded by her loving family, she died as she lived her life with elegance, poise, grace and dignity. Throughout her life, Bonnie used her love, her
respect for all and her boundless energy to reach out to those who crossed her path. She
had a unique ability to bring out the best in others, and to make everyone she touched feel
special. A constant source of help and encouragement in her community, church and
volunteer organizations, across Canada, the U.S. and Europe - she made us better people.
It is impossible to imagine family life without her presence. A ceremony to celebrate
Bonnie's life will be held on October 11th, at 2 :30 p.m. at Chalmers United Church, 212
Barrie St., Kingston, On. While flowers are appreciated, a donation to the charity of your

Sunday, October 5, 2003. Bertha "Bep" Fransman, at the age of 87 years. Dearly loved
mother of Renee O'Farrell and mother-in-law of Lawrence. Cherished Oma of Robin,
Andrea and Juliet. Predeceased by her dear son Andre and her beloved husband of 63
years, Salomon. Born in Antwerp, Belgium on February 24, 1916, she moved to the
Netherlands as a child and grew up in Amsterdam. With her young husband, she lived in
England dur ing the Second World War, started a family and emigrated to Canada in
1951. Always a source of strength to her family and a warm friend to many both in her
native Netherlands and her adopted home of Canada. She is well remembered as an
active member of the Medical Wives Society and the Hadassah Wizo and as a real estate
agent in Kingston. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the James Reid
Funeral Home, Cataraqui Chapel (Counter Street at Highway 2) on Wednesday, October
8, 2003 at 2 p.m.,with a time for fellowship and refreshment to follow in the James Reid

Burke Dlouhy. Werk was a graduate of Upper Canada College in Toronto and went on to
study and practice in the field of accounting. He lived in Napanee for over 50 years and
made many contributions to that community, including serving as Chairman of the
Hospital and School Boards, President of the County Historical Society and Finance
Steward of Trinity United Church. Werk was a committed member of the Rotary Club, s
erving as President of the Napanee Rotary Club in 1978 and joining the Oak Bay Rotary
Club in 1995. He attended regularly up until his death and was recently awarded the Paul
Harris Fellowship and sapphire pin for his generous support to the Rotary F oundation.
He enjoyed his last nine years in Victoria where he pursued his interests in the theatre,
the symphony and fine dining. A private interment will take place on Friday, October 10,
2003 at Riverside Cemetery, Napanee followed by a memorial g athering at 4:00 p.m. in

SMITH, Ella G. RN Jan. 23, 1908-Oct. 12, 2003 Ella Gertrude Smith, former Director of
Nursing at Kingston Psychiatric Hospital (Ontario Hospital) and former active member of
Zonta Club, Louise Rebekah Lodge #10 and several charitable organizations. E lla Smith
and her good friend Mildred Blackadder were active promoters of the Zion Complex at
106 Pine Street. Later she became a resident, a member of the Board and continued her
active participation at Zion United Church. Miss Smith was predeceased by her parents,
Eva Emily Coulter and Arthur Thomas Smith, her sisters Lena Alton, Mamie Patterson
and Aleda Ashley and one brother Charles Stewart Smith. She is survived by her loving
nephew Russel Patterson his wife Sharon and their sons, Timothy, his wife Christine and
daughter Carly, and Christopher Patterson. Russ and Sharon are grateful to Aunt Ella's
friends from the Zion Complex, the staffs of Trillium Ridge and Rideaucrest Care
Centres and her long-time friend Anne Brant for their lovi ng support and care. Friends

HOMUTH, Mary Jean Ann (nee Breau) Was born September 19, 1943 in Moncton, New
Brunswick. She passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, October 8, 2003.
Mary was a warm, wonderful woman who touched many lives by being herself. She was
married to her best friend Tom, for 41 years. Mary's life was her family; she was not only
a mother but a true best friend, cheerleader, and always knew when you needed her. She
was predeceased by her parents and her younger brother Mark. She is survived by her
husband Tom; son, Chris (Carol) and their two daughters, Margaret and Laura. She is
also survived by her son, Brian (Carrie) and their two children, Emily and Riley;
daughter, Trena who considered Mary to be her best friend, hero and role model. She will
live in our hearts forever. Visitation will be held at McCall Bros., Johnson at Vancouver
St., Victoria, on Saturday, October 11, 2003 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Memorial Service will

Jean Gwendolyn Wilson (nee Winter) Of Gananoque, passed away at Kingston General
Hospital on September 21, 2003. She was 68. Jean was born in Napanee, the daughter of
the late William Harold and Edna Bernice Winter. Jean was married to Roy Wilson on
October 17, 1953 at St. John's Catholic Church, Gananoque, Ontario. Jean worked at the
Bank of Montreal; as a Welfare Officer for the Town of Gananoque and Brockville; and
in the Public Utilities Office for the Town of Gananoque. She attended St. Joh n's
Catholic Church and Calvary Pentecostal Church and was also an active member of the
Catholic Women's League and Parent/Teacher Association when her children were
younger. In addition to raising 6 children with her husband Roy, Jean was an active
member of the community and was involved in the development of the Gananoque Food
Bank; Senior's Assistance for Independent Living (SAIL); was the first woman President
of the Minor Hockey Association in Ontario; was involved with the Christmas Baske t
Fund in Gananoque; was frequently an elections officer in Municipal and Provincial
voting pools and frequently canvased door-to-door for local charities. Jean was
predeceased by two brothers, Garnet and Glen Winter. She is survived by her husband,
Roy Wilson and by her children, Cheryl (Rick) Harding, Gananoque; Bill (Connie)
Wilson, Cambridge; Larry Wilson, Napanee; Terry (Shirley) Wilson, Hope, B.C.; Valerie
(Ron) Clark, Lansdowne; Barbara (Doug) Earle, Gananoque. She was a loving
grandmothe r to 14 grandchildren: Christopher and Sarah Harding, Richelle, Philip and
David Wilson, Shelin, Sheryl and Shai-Lynn Wilson, Nikki Wilson, Kyle and Sonia
Clark, and Leland, Daniel and Rebecca Earle. She was predeceased by one grandson,
Trey Wilson w hom the angels took at birth. Jean loved to play bridge with her friends
and enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends before her illness. She had a large
network of friends and will be sadly missed by all.

FOSTER, Ronald Jess 1919-2003 Passed away peacefully on October 13, 2003 at St.
Mary's of the Lake, in his 85th year. He is survived by his wife Barbara, son Stephen
(Lynn), daughter Susan Wheatland, sons Alan Mutch (Barbara) and Graham Mutch
(Fran), grandchildren Sean, Aleisha, Erin, Louise, Simon, Jonathan, and Emily, great
grandchildren Ben, Megan, Declan and Jaiden, and his devoted dog Misty. Born in
Fredericton, N.B., he enlisted September 3, 1939 and served as Sergeant in the 90th
Battery, 1st Anti Tank-Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery in WW II. He was
wounded twice, mentioned in dispatches and decorated by Field Marshall Montgomery.
Following the war he moved to Kingston where he worked as Foreman in Polymer at
DuPont. He enj oyed many years of community service including: 47 years with the
Lions Club of Kingston where he was Past President and Life Member, Ron was honored
as a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions International Foundation for "dedicated humanitarian
services." He was a member of the Cataraqui Masonic Lodge 92; a worthy Noble of the
Kingston and District Shrine Club; and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch
560. Following retirement, winters were spent at Lake Seminole Estates, Florida where
Ron enjoy ed 27 years as a Snowbird. He will be fondly remembered for his Christmas
dinners, pancake breakfasts, Super Bowl parties and many other volunteer activities. The
family would like to thank Dr. Anna Tomiak and Carolyn Huff-Winters, R.N. and staff at
the Kingston Regional Cancer Centre; Jill Coffey, R.N. and the staff at All Care; Dr. G.

PATERSON, Tyler Derek Michael July 6, 2003-October 16, 2003 Tyler passed away at
the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa in the arms of his parents Mike
Paterson and Sonya Thompson. He will be sadly missed by his big brother and sister
Liam and Brandee. Tyler will always be lovingly remembered by his grandparents Gord
and Jeannette Paterson and Ken and Georgina Thompson; his great grandparents Doreen

ENSLEE, Edith Joyce Edith Joyce Enslee of Boynton Beach, Florida, formerly of
Morristown, N.J. and Mt. Lakes, N.J., passed away in Lauer Hospice of Palm Beach
County, on August 27, 2003. She was 92. Born Edith Joyce Miller of Battersea, Ontario,
Cana da, she was the fourth of six children of Albert Miller and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick,
subsistence dairy farmers and fishing guides. She completed her elementary grades in the
local one room schoolhouse and attended several years of high school in Sydenh am,
Ontario, where she boarded during the week with local residents. She would return home
each weekend to work on the farm and to prepare her provisions for the next week. Edith
had the opportunity in 1927 to complete her education in the United Sta tes. She would
attend West High School in Rochester, N.Y. and live with her sister who had arrived
several years before. At her graduation ceremony in January, 1929, she was selected to
read an essay that she had written about life in the tiny countr y village in which she had
grown up. After attending the University of Rochester for a year, Edith moved to New
York City where she studied library science at the Brooklyn Public Library. While living
in Brooklyn, she met David Scars Enslee of Morris town, N.J., a graduate of the Pratt
Institute of Brooklyn. They were married in 1936. Edith became a Citizen in 1937. In
1938 the Enslees moved to the Rainbow Lakes section of Parsippany, N.J. where she
spent the next several years rebuilding a summe r bungalow into a winterized house.
They later lived in Morristown, N.J. In 1942, she gave birth to her only child, George,
who suffered from a hard to diagnose digestive condition. Edith frequently defied war
time restrictions on travel, attempting to find competent doctors to treat the rapidly failing
infant. She was ultimately successful in locating a physician to treat the child. In spite of
food rationing during the war, she was able to acquire from friends and family enough of
the few food s that the infant could tolerate and kept him healthy until he was accurately
diagnosed. Mrs. Enslee joined the staff of the Morris County Free Library in 1948, where
she would work until her retirement in 1973. The family moved to Mountain Lakes in
1949, where Edith attended the Community Church, and became a member of the Order
of the Eastern Star #270. Upon her retirement in 1973, Edith and her husband moved to
Boynton Beach, Florida, where she became a member of the Lakeside Methodist Church
of Lake Worth Florida. In her retirement community she played competitive shuffleboard
with her late husband and took part in many of his activities with the Shriners.
Throughout her life, Edith Enslee was unfailingly devoted to her family and frien ds and
was always thought of in the highest regard by those who benefitted from her presence.
She is survived by her son, George, and her two grandchildren, David C. and Amelia E.
Enslee.

SONNEMANN, Joachim (Hans, Jochen) July 26, 1924- October 19, 2003 Passed away
peacefully and without drugs, at home on beautiful Cranberry Lake, surrounded by his
family. Beloved husband for 56 years of Charlotte Erna Frieda (Engel). His daughters Sa
bine Sonnemann, Newmarket; Estra Barr (Jack), Inverary will deeply miss their Papi. His
grandchildren Derrek (Trisha) Barr ; Tania Gordon (David), Delta; Marika Sonnemann
Petro, Newmarket; great-grandchildren Gina and Kaitlin Gordon and Kassie Barr w ill
greatly miss their beloved Opa. He is survived by his brother Manfred Sonnemann
(Ingrid) Berlin, and sister Eva Greif (Karl Heinz) Potsdam, nephew Tim Sonnemann
(Steffi) and their daughter Rosalie (and niece Tanja Sonnemann and her daughter Nele) ,
as well as sister-in-law Gisela Brandenburg, all of Germany. He was a man with a vision
for a better life, and who as a political refugee from East Germany, brought his family to
Canada in December 1957. He and the family arrived in Halifax, with t hree suitcases and
no English. However, he had a successful career as a Maintenance Mechanic Journeyman
at the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital for over twenty-five years. A veteran of WWII, he
was a soldier in, and survivor of the Battles of Rostov, th e Cherkassey Pocket and
Stalingrad (5th Panzer Division Wiking). Canada allowed him to realize his vision and
leave a legacy of love and courage. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations
made to the Storrington Fire Fighters Association, (RR 2 Inverary, ON K0H 1X0) would
be most appreciated by his family. We would like to thank Dr. Lynn Stewart of Seeley's
Bay for her compassion and understanding our philosophy of "good dying". All friends,

Carrie "Gladys" Mooney Of Kingston Ontario, wife of the late Charles Mooney, formerly
of Napanee passed away at K.G.H., Saturday October 4, 2003, three days before her
ninety-first birthday. Born Carrie Gladys Benn, daughter of the late John and Essi e
Benn, she was the fourth of seven children. Gladys grew up in the Napanee area, attended
Forest Mills and Napanee schools then entered training at the Whitby Psychiatric
Hospital. Unfortunately this was cut short due to rheumatic fever. She met and later
married Charles Mooney of Napanee at a midnight wedding ceremony November 24,
1934 at Roblin. Gladys and Charles had three children, son John Hugh (died in infancy)
and two daughters, Joan and Kay. The family were members at Trinity United Chu rch
where Gladys taught Sunday School and was superintendent of the Mission Band and
sang in the choir. Later they moved to Kingston where they were members at Princess St.
United church where Gladys also taught Sunday School and sang in the choir an d was a
member of the U.C.W. She worked as a sales clerk in Gayfair Napanee and Lipsons and
S&R in Kingston. A devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great
grandmother, Gladys loved spending time with her family and friends. A very
independent woman, she drove her car herself and lived in her own home right up to the
summer of 2003. Gladys enjoyed knitting and gardening in her spare time. She belonged
to the Rotary Ann Club, and loved to go out to dinner with them. Gladys is su rvived by
her daughters Joan (Alex) and Kay (Mario, deceased); grandchildren, great grandchildren
and great great granddaughters; four sisters, a sister-cousin and many nieces, nephews
and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, infant son, son-in-law and
brothers Wilfred and Kenneth. The funeral was held October 7, 2003 with with Rev.
Harold Alston officiating. Interment was at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens. Gladys left
wonderful memories with all that knew her.

BURGESS, Donald F. Don passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at
Kingston General Hospital following a year of deteriorating health. He is survived by his
faithful wife of 56 years June (Miller), and their devoted daughters Carol, Kingst on and
Donna, Ottawa. His brother Trevor and sister Betty Robberstad, Ottawa also survive.
Born in Cape Breton, a veteran of World War II, Don was a prisoner of war at Stalag 11
B. In April 1945 he escaped during an air raid and following five nights in the woods he
reached the British lines. He was repatriated to London and later returned to Canada by
Lancaster Bomber. He was employed as a naval electrician at Point Edward Naval Base
and in 1964 moved his family to Kingston where he was employe d by Dupont until his
retirement. In keeping with his beliefs, cremation has taken place and final arrangments
for the family are private. Relatives, friends and neighbors are invited to pay their
respects on Sunday, November 2, 2003 from 2-4 p.m. at James Reid Funeral Home,
Reception Centre (Counter Street at Highway 2, rear entrance). Those considering

HAWKES, Philip Paul 1947 - 2003 We sadly announce the death of our beloved brother,
Paul, in Vallejo, California on October 3, 2003. Paul was born in Kingston in 1947. He
worked at Spearns China Shop as a teenager and was also involved in Wing 416 Ai r
Cadets. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served five years with the Marines
including a tour of duty with the Combat Unit in Viet Nam. He married Sharon Clanton
of Vallejo on March 25th, 1967. For the past three years he has suffered the af ter effects
of two liver transplants and also a kidney transplant. He is survived by his best friend and
wife, Sharon, his sisters E. Joan Roantree (Walter), Brenda Smalbill (the late Klass), his
brothers Brian E. Hawkes (Pam) and A. Fred G. Hawkes ( Polly) and numerous nieces
and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Katie (Aunt Kate) Hawkes
and his sister Sally Bonner and her husband W. Basil Bonner. He was a wonderful
brother and we will miss him but he is at peace. A Memorial Service will be held at the
James Reid Funeral Home, Cataraqui Chapel (Counter Street at Highway 2), on
Thursday, October 30, at 10:30 a.m. with a reception following in the James Reid
Reception Centre.

BERRY, William Alexander May 11, 1924-October 27, 2003 William (Bill) Berry
passed away quietly October 27, 2003 at his home near Napanee, Ontario in his 80th
year. Bill was married to his loving wife Margaret Rebecca Eaton Berry for 54 years. He
is survived by his three sons, Keith (Elaine) from Edmonton, Stan (Pam) in Beaverlodge,
Alberta, as well as Jim (Ellen) from Cambridge. Grandpa will be sadly missed by his five
grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his cherish ed stepsister Enid (Dolly) and husband Jack West. Bill worked for Ontario Hydro as senior
concrete inspector, helping construct many of the power dams in Northern Ontario as
well as the first commercial nuclear power plant at Douglas Point. He chang ed jobs in
1964, becoming the Supervisor of Technical Services for Red-D-Mix Concrete in
Hamilton. He settled in Burlington until he retired from Standard Slag (Lafarge North
America) in 1989. For the past ten years he had lived south of Napanee wher e he could
enjoy the beautiful waterfront vistas every day. Bill was a member of the Masonic Lodge
and involved in many of the senior activities in the South Fredricksburg community.
Many thanks to the friends and neighbours for their kind help and a ssistance. Cremation
has taken place; interment and a memorial service will be planned at a later date.

MCKENDRY, Blake Ault With regret the family of Blake Ault McKendry announces his
passing at Trillium Ridge Centre on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the age 84. Born 4
July, 1919 in South Gower, Grenville Cty., he was the second son of Edward McKendry
and Blanche Ault McKendry. His brother Douglas (Ethel) predeceased him. After
acquiring his B.Sc. at Queen's University in 1941, Blake worked at RCA Victor and then
Smart & Biggar & Fetherstonhaugh & Co. in Ottawa. In the mid 1950s he became
interest ed, with his wife Ruth, in art, rare books and antiques, both as sellers and
collectors. They restored an early stone farmhouse near Elginburg in the 1970s, where
they lived until moving to Kingston in 1994. Author and photographer, Blake leaves a si
gnificant legacy to Canadian culture, in particular because of his books on Canadian art
and folk art. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his children Jennifer of Kingston and David
of Ottawa, daughter-in-law Nancy, and grandsons John, Ian and Martin. The family

parents Gordon and Mary Jane Corkey and her brothers George and Joe. Friends will be
received at the Central Chapel of the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Homes, 49 Colborne
St reet (at Clergy Street) on Friday, October 31st between the hours of 2-5 p.m. Mass of
Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 1st at St. Joseph's Church, at 10 a.m., Rev.
Fr. Francis O'Connor Celebrant. Rite of Committal with Prayers St. Mary's C emetery.
