5E Inquiry Lesson Plan
Title : Virus Modeling Lab
Grade level: 7th
National Standards:
Grades 5-8:
Content Standard C: Life Science-Structure and Function of Living Systems; each type of cell, tissue and organ has a distinct structure and set of functions that serve the organism as a whole.
ACOS:
1
Objectives:
1. The students will be able to identify the structure of five different viruses: tobacco mosaic, adenovirus, HIV, potato X and a bacteriophage.
2. The students will build models to illustrate the structure of these viruses.
3. The students will describe the composition of viruses and their life cycle.
4. The students will identify the size of the viruses on the nanoscale.
5. The students will investigate how viral diseases can be treated and prevented with antiviral drugs.
6. The students will model and explain how viruses can be useful in genetic research.
