To function as a “floating veterinarian” for the SPCA of Texas by performing surgeries at a high volume level, seeing private wellness clients, performing vet checks on shelter animals, and assisting with vaccine clinics and cruelty cases. 2. Must be able to travel to any and all of the SPCA of Texas locations to report for duty and be prepared to provide veterinary assistance as needed. 3. Must have respect for and willingness to work with shelter and clinic staff and all types of animals and a commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics. 4. Must understand and practice “herd” health principles as well as individual animal care. 5. Must perform physical examinations and diagnostic/medical procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort and must be able to explain physical examination findings and communicate to the staff and owner a diagnosis of the animal’s problems and must generate and present a treatment plan for the animal. 6. Must be able and willing to develop and administer disease prevention for shelter animals which can encompass traditional medical practices such as vaccination, parasite control, and nutrition as well as areas less commonly considered such as air quality, facility design, stress reduction and management of population density. 7. Individual must possess professional comportment and appearance, with excellent interpersonal skills and a positive, friendly attitude. 8. Individual must be able and willing to examine, diagnose, and treat disease and injuries of animals including but not limited to, dogs, cats, and occasionally livestock and exotics. Individual may be asked to serve as a resource to assist Shelter Manager with protocols for sanitary measures, feeding, disease prevention and general care to promote quality healthcare for the animals. 10. Individual is required to perform spay/neuter surgeries and other surgeries on shelter and/or private animals each scheduled work day (or as needed). 11. Must allow the SPCA of Texas to designate them as the Veterinarian of record for the SPCA of Texas if asked. Typical decisions this position has TOTAL authority to make: 1. Medical diagnosis related to the care of shelter and private animals, including but not limited to, dogs, cats, livestock, and exotics brought to the SPCA of Texas. Typical problems this position will face: 1. Euthanasia issues. 2. Fractious animals. 3. Adverse reactions to treatments and/or anesthesia. 4. Client issues. 5. Teaching, training, and/or assisting other Veterinarians and shelter staff in disease prevention for shelter animals, vaccination practices, parasite control, and nutrition, shelter air quality, facility design, shelter animal stress reduction and management principles of population density. Knowledge, skill, and abilities needed to perform the Essential functions of this position: 1. Must demonstrate the Core Values of the SPCA of Texas on and off the job. 2. Understanding of and a willingness to apply management practices relating to shelter medicine. 3. Prior shelter Veterinary experience and superior customer service, teaching, and training skills. 4. Must be a team player. 5. Must have a realistic view of change and ample patience in assisting the management group in developing new and improved procedures and processes for the SPCA of Texas animal population as well as the shelter staff. 6. Superior customer service skills. Required professional licensing or certifications: 1. Licensure in good standing to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas. 2. Current Texas DPS license. 3. Current DEA license. 4. Graduate degree from an accredited veterinary college (DVM or VMD). 5. USDA certification. PHYSICAL DEMANDS 1.
