National Museum of Science and Technology Via San Vittore 21, Milan http://www.museoscienza.org/english/press/ press kit and pictures Milan, 22 April 2015. At the National Museum of Science and Technology, opening of “#FoodPeople. The exhibition for people eager for innovation”, a major exhibition dedicated to the changes that have marked the way we eat and to the future prospects of the food system. The exhibition is designed and created by the Museum with the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo. Institutional partner: Regione Lombardia – Agriculture. Main partner: Valagro. Partners: BASF GRANAROLO, Air Liquide Italy, SAME DEUTZ-FAHR, SAMMONTANA, Image Line, Netafim, with the support of YAKULT Federazione ANIMA, Epta, Riello. On this occasion the Museum opens its doors for free to families and citizens, with an Open Night from 6 to 11 pm, offering tours and activities in its labs. The exhibition will run from April 23 until the end of 2015. Opening times are the same as the general admission time of the Museum and ticket included in general admission ticket. It is one of the initiatives of the program "Expo in the city", sponsored by the City of Milan with the Chamber of Commerce. People are at the core of the exhibition “#FoodPeople. The exhibition for people eager for innovation”: each of us in his/her relationship with food. Food production professionals, researchers and industry experts, teenagers and adults are all involved in the design of the exhibition. Sharing, change, relationships and technology are the keys to understanding chosen by the Museum to interpret the theme of Expo 2015. "We are proud to present the exhibition #FoodPeople - declares Fiorenzo Galli, Director General of the National Museum of Science and Technology - which is part of a plan for the development of cultural and educational resources initiated by the museum in 2009. The role of the Museum is to interpret the past to provide interpretations of the present and cast a look on the future. On this occasion, stimulated by the theme of Expo 2015, we made a commitment to recount innovative aspects in the food chain, highlighting their relationships with other systems and future prospects. We were able to deal with these issues, which closely affect each one of us, thanks to the many partner companies, all working towards innovation in their own sector". "Fondazione Cariplo is hungry for innovation - says Sergio Urbani, Secretary General of the Cariplo Foundation - A voracious appetite that can only be satisfied by sustaining projects, more than a thousand every year, with a common denominator: social innovation alongside non-profit agents. It is the case for social housing, new welfare, cultural enterprises that employ young people; and for research in the field of food, where the Foundation is committed alongside the main Italian and foreign organizations, to innovate and find solutions to problems for improving nutrition and combating hunger in the world". "Agriculture and food can be told in many ways, even in terms of innovation and scientific research, as happens with #FoodPeople at the National Museum of Science and Technology - says Gianni Fava, Lombardy Commissioner of Agriculture - Lombardy could not be the first agrifood region in Europe, if industry had not introduced new technologies and advanced systems in support of ancient knowledge and traditional uses, both necessary to combine high quality products and recognized as necessary for food safety. Tradition, quality, food safety will be crucial themes, along with the protection of products, which the Lombardy Region will pose during Expo, to defend agricultural supply chains". The exhibition highlights the important role played by scientific and technological innovations within the agri-food sector and in daily life. Over 700 square meters dedicated to all, in which to try and see in a different perspective objects and technologies that are now part of our everyday life, the relationship between ourselves and the food system, what happens within the industries that produce our food, appreciate the innovative aspects of today’s agriculture, take a look at the future and explore firsthand many exciting topics in the three interactive workshops dedicated to Food, Biotechnology and Genetics. Many characters, represented in pictures or videos, accompany visitors with their stories, along two complementary narratives. The first tracing some of the major scientific and technological innovations that have crossed the agri-food sector and its activities over the past 150 years. The second allowing visitors to encounter scenarios and perspectives related to the future of food, starting from spontaneously emerging questions, answered by experts from different sectors. #FoodPeople is based on an innovative co-curating approach, based on the joint work of Museum staff and groups of visitors, especially teenagers and adults, Italians and foreigners. Today from 6 to 11 pm, for the opening of #FoodPeople, the Museum has organized a free Open Night, offering a preview visit. During the evening the Dutch Innovation Zone organized by Museon in The Hague will also open. This exhibition, open until October 31, focuses on how the Netherlands have identified in scientific research, innovation and smart international cooperation the key elements for sustainable solutions to global challenges in the food industry. Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 April will be the first weekend of special activities related to the exhibition. Special guided tours with the curators of the exhibition. In the Food, Biotechnology and Genetics workshops, you can imagine and prepare the food of the future, investigate fruits and edible flowers, or find out how molds and bacteria can be useful in food production. In the Tinkering Zone you can compose digital sounds using fruits and vegetables. During the six-months of Expo 2015, the workshops will be open every day with activities for schools and families.
