Trial Implementation Sub-group of DICOM’s
Working Group Seven (Radiotherapy)
July 14, 2011
1. Preliminary Events
Chairman Schadt called the T-con to order at 10:00 a.m. USA Eastern time. Participants
identified themselves and their employers. The minutes of the June 10 t-con were approved.
The Secretary reviewed the antitrust rules. The Agenda was approved with the addition of U.
Busch’ suggestion of discussing frame alignment, resolution, orientation, currently supported.
2.
Discussion of the draft: Definitions for Trial Implementation, Part 1, Segmentationrelated IODs in the scope of 2nd Generation RT Objects (DTI Part. 1).
The Group continued the discussion of the draft at the topic: Derivation Image Sequence.
Considerable discussion took place expanding this topic considerably. The main discussion
point was the semantics of this sequence for a producer and a consumer. It was agreed upon that
a producer shall include only instances that were used to create the volume out of which the
segments were created. For a consumer it is recommended to only utilize the image instances
that are listed in this sequence. Then, reasons were identified that may cause the selection of only
a sub-set of image instances:

spatial relation

temporal relation

a shared frame of reference
3. Naming of Segments
W. Bosch reported that there is no new development in the discussion of using SNOMED codes
as labels.
4. Discussion of Frame Size
It was reviewed and confirmed that the topic is sufficiently covered in the draft document and
that only one frame size is allowed..
5. Next Steps
The Chair asked the group to discuss and evaluate the progress to date in this Sub-group. It was
the consensus that the selection of topic and method of presentation in this paper meets the
intended goal, which is to assist IHE-RO implementers with information and to provide the IHERO Technical Committee with guidance and information for a new possible Technical Profile.
Next there was a discussion about the use of segmentation in the imaging modalities; the
nDimensional Presentation State discussions were referenced discussing segmentation
particularly in the surgery domain.
The question about the multiplicity of segmentation instances was raised. As this topic was
thoroughly discussed during a prior telephone conference, the Chair reviewed the discussed
solution and asked to not continue the discussion on this topic, except serious objections to the

currently agreed approach require a new discussion. No such objections were presented at the
moment.
It was also discussed whether surface segmentation should be the next part.
ACTION:
Christof will continue the work with the RT Segmentation properties.
Finally it was confirmed that the DRAFT will not formally be transferred or posted outside of
WG-07 as the segmentation topic is still not complete. However, the persons associated with
WG-07 may be using the information for coding and implementation and all are encouraged to
provide feedback at any time. This Group will decide later if and when a formal transfer of this
paper to e.g. posting on the IHE-RO Technical Committee would happen.
6.
Next Meeting
The next T-con will be at the call of the Chair.
7. Adjournment
The Tcon was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
