But, first, please read the graduation eligibility requirements, on page 3 of the Registration Information, of who may participate in our CHEM Graduation Ceremony. Registration closes April 23, 2013 or when the 40 graduates’ limit is reached After reading the next page you should have all the information to make an informed decision about participating in our ceremony. Registration Information – page 3 ~ Who Can Participate in the CHEM Graduation ~ Families do not have to be members of CHEM to participate or to help with graduation. Nor do families have to volunteer to help the previous year in order to take part in our ceremony. CHEM hosts a yearly graduation ceremony so homeschoolers can celebrate together and bring glory to God in the process. CHEM does not certify, issue, or approve graduation diplomas as the graduates do not graduate from CHEM, only with CHEM. Diplomas are awarded by the parents to their own graduate based upon completion of the graduation requirements and standards they have established for the home education of their own child. A child is home educated when the majority of their studies are through private homeschooling under the direction and tutelage of their parents. Eligibility requirements for participating in the CHEM Graduation Exercises: 1. As a service to the homeschool community, CHEM hosts a “Christian” graduation ceremony for homeschooling families who: a. have a child who has completed the parents’ graduation requirements. b. homeschooled that child, i.e., educated according to a philosophy of self directed education outside of and independent of federal, state, and local governments and do not benefit from publicly funded programs. c. live on the Westside of Metro-Detroit. Available spots will be provided to Westside homeschooling families first. Any family not living on the Westside of Metro-Detroit and wishing to participate in our Westside Ceremony will be able to sign-up, after February 15th, as long as there is still room. d. are accepting of our format. Participating families need to have read and be accepting of our format as stated in “Specifications for Our Commencement Exercises” and this year’s “Registration Information for Later Sign-Up” (both documents are available on our website, www.CHEMgraduation.org). 2. The total number of graduates that can participate in our ceremony each year is limited: a. first, by the seating capacity of the church facility we are able to secure, and b. secondly, to a maximum of 40 graduates, due to the length of time a larger ceremony would mandate. c. Because of these size limitations we ask that if a family has the opportunity and/or are planning to also participate in another organization’s ceremony that they do not participate in ours, leaving the space for homeschooling families without another option for a public ceremony available to them. 3. We realize there may be unique circumstances regarding participation, thus CHEM reserves the right to determine, on an individual basis, which families can and cannot participate in our CHEM Westside graduation ceremony each year. Additionally, I/We agree to hold harmless and indemnify CHEM and its officer, agents, and representatives from any and all liability connected with or associated with student-led senior year activities of any and all kind that I/We engage in. DATED: _______________________ _____________________________ STUDENT (Sign, then print name below) _______________________________________ CUSTODIAL PARENT/GUARDIAN (Print name below) _____________________________ _____________________________________ Student must sign and print for themselves Why the Need for A Signed Waiver of Liability ~ Since CHEM’s operating structure is through a simple planning committee with a couple moms coming together each year to host this event, as a service to the local homeschool community, insurance coverage is obtained through the church in which the graduation ceremony is held instead of carrying an individual policy. This insurance provides liability coverage only while graduates, their families, and guests are on the church’s property. For this reason CHEM does not sponsor or host any off-site activities for our graduates, though we do suggest that graduates and/or their parents hold their own personal events should they desire to do so. Unfortunately, the last few years has seen a rise in law suits against homeschool groups and chaperones of school activities so, we are asking that each of our graduating families sign the above “Release and Waiver of Liability; Hold Harmless and Indemnity Agreement” in the event their graduate participates in any student-led senior year activities. We believe the liability/injury risk from senior year activities should be no different than any other activity you would personally plan to hold on your own premises or at a public location where your homeowner’s and automobile policy, as well as the public facility’s policy would provide coverage in the event an accident or injury should occur (there has been none to date). We trust you will be in favor of signing the waiver. If not, we ask that you not take part in any of the student-led senior year activities. Thank you for your understanding!
