1934 Royal Navy Fleet Signal Book SPECIAL PENDANTS PENDANT Answering (a) Singly: Is the answer from Junior Officers to flag and semaphore signals (b) Superior to the Affirmative: Yes (c) “ to the Negative: No (d) Occupying the 3rd or a succeeding place in a series of flags or pendants: It is the substitute for the 2nd flag or pendant used in the series. (e)Inferior to certain flags: Distinguishing Signals Table. S. 2, p.45 (a) Singly: Is the Code and Answering Pendant in the international Code of Signals. It is used as laid down in that book, and when so used is always to be referred to as the Code Pendant. Bearing (b) Superior to a compass group: Is termed a bearing signal as is used in conjunction with a signal to denote the Bearing. (a) Singly: The column ( or part of the column addressed ) is to stand by to turn together to Starboard s. 3 p.45 Blue Superior to a compass group, or in conjunction with a numeral group or the Numeral Pendant: - Alter Course signals for ships turning together s. 3 p. 44 Singly, in harbour: Have private telegram for ships addressed s. 12 p. 20 (a) Singly, at the peak or gaff in harbour: The ships company is at prayers. (c) Singly, just above the signal platform: Man overboard (d) Superior to the Affirmative: Man is saved. Course (a) Singly: The column (or part of the column addressed) is to steer a course 20deg. Beyond the direction in which the ship is heading at the moment of making this signal. s. 3, p. 46. Battlefleet Deployment or Re-deployment signal s. 3, p. 49 Deployment (b) Singly in harbour: Open to visitors (a) Singly: Resume previous disposition s. 3, p. 4 Disposition (b) Superior to a compass group: Is termed a disposition signal and signifies guides of columns are to be disposed as indicated from the Guide of the unit. (c) Singly, at the yardarm in harbour: Is flown by the ship having the Guard (a) Singly: Reform Formation (b) Superior to a compass group: Is termed a formation signal and signifies ships in column are to form as indicated from their Guides s. 3, p.3 (c) Superior to a numeral flag: Orders certain Formations. s. 3, p 2. Interrogative (a) Superior to any signal, or superior with a tackline to more than one signal: Governs the signal immediately inferior and signifies that the purport of the signal-s is/are to be read in an Interrogative sense; or When hoisted by a Junior Officer, signifies that Permission is requested to execute the purport of the signal-s. (b) Occupying the 2nd or a succeeding place in a series of pendants: Is the substitute for the first pendant of the series. Singly, by a destroyer after action: Ship is in a Second state of fitness. Large Black Numeral (a) Superior to numeral flags ( which may or may not be separated by the numeral pendant): Is termed a Numeral Signal and signifies that the flags represent Numbers only. (b) Superior to numeral flags at the yardarm in action: Range of enemy in hundreds of yards. S. 9, p. 21 (c) Superior to numeral flags at the yardarm by destroyers during reorganisation: Number of torpedoes remaining s. 9, p. 44 (d) Superior to numeral flags when refuelling: Number of tons remaining to be taken in up to the last hour. (e) Between numeral flags: Signifies the Decimal point, the numeral flags superior signifying whole numbers, those inferior decimals. (a) Singly: Resume previous order.
