CUMBERLAND COUNTY COLLEGE RADIOGRAPHY PROGRAM CLINICAL PRACTICUM AND FILM EVALUATION RT 103 The goal of this first clinical practicum will be to: Communicate with patients Use medical terminology Understand and become involved with the flow of people and paper within a radiology department Begin utilizing patient care skills Observe and assist staff radiographers with radiographic procedures Use radiographic equipment Practice the procedures on which simulated competency examinations have been completed The first several weeks of clinical rotations will be used to orient students to hospitals, radiology departments, infection control policies, fire and safety regulations, public relations, legal and ethical issues, body mechanics, and “right to know” workplace information. Students will participate in a tour of their assigned clinical education center and its departments and become familiar with the role and responsibilities of students within a radiology department. Students will then be scheduled for rotations in the following areas: Area Quality Assurance Darkroom/Image Processing Front desk area File area Transportation Radiographic room Fluoroscopic room Purpose Work flow and film hanging Film processing Evaluating requests and office procedures Finding patients’ previous films & reports Practicing lifting and moving techniques Room readiness and equipment operation Room readiness, equipment operation, and visualization of patient protection equipment Students will be directly supervised throughout all activities. Once a laboratory competency has been completed in the classroom, students may take an active role in the radiography of patients. If laboratory competencies have not been successfully completed, students may observe and assist a radiographer. RT 103 Clinical Pract B. Peacock 02/16/16 CUMBERLAND COUNTY COLLEGE RADIOGRAPHY PROGRAM RT 103 Clinical Practicum and Film Evaluation - Page 2 – Film evaluation sessions will be scheduled each semester. These sessions will be used initially to orient students to the radiology department and to practice hanging films on a view box. As the semester progresses, film evaluation sessions will be used to evaluate films of the procedures presented in RT 102. Laboratory practice sessions will be scheduled as needed. These sessions will be used to demonstrate and allow students to become familiar with all of the general radiographic equipment and accessory items. Students having difficulty with any procedures will be given guidance during lab sessions. GRADING PROCEDURES: Grades for this semester will be based on the average of the following three components: 1. performance evaluations 2. film evaluations 3. the number of competencies achieved (see competency goal sheet) A minimum of one (1) clinical competency evaluation must be achieved to successfully complete this semester, regardless of other clinical grades earned. A grade of 90% or above is passing for all clinical competency evaluations. A = 92 - 100 B = 83 - 91 C = 75 - 82 D = 68 - 74 CLINICAL ATTENDANCE: As published in the Radiography Handbook, students are allowed 2 clinical absences per semester. Those students with absences exceeding 2 days will complete supplemental clinical education assignments at the end of the semester. These assignments will correlate to the missed clinical experiences and allow for the completion of competency requirements. The appropriate form for supplemental assignments will be completed by the student and clinical instructor and kept in the student clinical book. RT 103 Clinical Pract B.
