1 “Where are the Kings?” Part 3 (Maintaining a Focus) We will study: 1. Building a Foundation 2. Maintaining a Focus Scripture Reading: Hebrews 6:1-3, AMP II. ‘Building a Foundation’ is the first step in the process of reaching our spiritual potential. Our foundation establishes our path to God and we are then in alignment with His original intention. The foundation is built on God’s Word. Luke 6:47-49, Message Bible A. How we build, and the materials we use to construct God’s foundation in the lives of His people, will have serious repercussions. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, Message Bible 1. The foundation is Jesus; He is the solid rock of our salvation. His life has affirmed God’s Word as the truth which validates every believer with the guaranteed promise of eternal life. He is the cornerstone that completes the totality of our being. Ephesians 2:19-22, NIV The foundation begins with prophets, confirmed with apostles, and completed by Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. The purpose of the foundation is to establish a dwelling or housing for God’s presence (the Holy Spirit) to live within our spirit. 2 Timothy 2:19, NIV 2. We are to rely on this foundation as stone and honor, dependable and secure in accomplishing whatever is needed for the finishing work of salvation. 1 Peter 2:6-8, Message Bible B. The three components needed to solidify a strong foundation in our lives are: The Holy Spirit, a prayer and study of the Word lifestyle, and character development. 2 Peter 1:5-8, NIV 1. The Holy Spirit John 14:26, NIV 2. Prayer and study of the Word 1 Thessalonians 5:17-19, AMP, 2 Timothy 2:15, AMP 3. Character development Romans 5:3-4, AMP II. ‘Maintaining a Focus’ is a priority that we must not ignore. Our ‘Focus’ is the central feature that enables us to persevere from the setbacks of our old nature or lifestyle. Colossians 3:1-3, NIV 2 ‘Set your affection on’ refers to us exercising our mind, to have mental willingness to earnestly look in a certain direction; to intensively interest oneself in (with concern or obedience that maintains ones focus). To set our affection upon heavenly things requires discipline. To set our affection upon heavenly things requires a self controlled life. To set our affection upon heavenly things requires a sacrificial life that denies our ‘self will.’ A. Our lives should have a Kingdom mindset that is so focused that we strive for perfection. In our pursuit for a life which pleases God, we will discover that none of the old lifestyle can travel on this path. Luke 13:24, KJV B. ‘Strive’ refers to a struggle, literally (to compete for a prize), to contend with an adversary, and to endeavor to accomplish something. Luke 13:24, Message Bible 1. Everything we do has its part in completing the work of salvation inside of us. We are to focus as one who competes to obtain a prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, NIV 2. There are no weights, sins, character faults, un-forgiveness, bitterness, or rage, just to name a few, that can travel on the path that leads to eternal life. Matthew 7:13-14, NIV A lack of focus will endanger our soul towards destruction. Unaware, we can become lethargic in our pursuit and a world’s attitude can over take us. Luke 21:34-36, NIV Without focus, the adversary is able to control us mentally and emotionally. Without focus, we reduce our ability to exercise our Kingdom authority. Without focus, our spirit man struggles with interacting with the Holy Spirit and we struggle with understanding the Word of God. Without focus, we are unable to apprehend revelation knowledge from God’s Word. Without focus, we will never reach our potential. Conclusion: The Holy Spirit, prayer, God’s Word, and character development working together, will solidify the foundation of truth in our spirit. As a result of this foundation, we are able to maximize our potential. This is why it is equally important for us to remain focused in our pursuit for salvation. It is when we ‘focus,’ that spiritual maturity and character development are acclimated into our lives.
