Title: Our Class Alphabet Book
By: Heather McAllister
Grade Level: Kindergarten (Pre-K)
Goals:
1. I want to have the children work together to create an alphabet book for the classroom.
2. I want the children to be able to correctly draw pictures for their specific letter of the
alphabet.
3. After the lesson I want the children to remember the pictures and which letters of the
alphabet that they match up to, as well as taking pride in their work.
Objectives: The students will:
1. Recognize that objects start with different letters.
2. Identify what letter objects start with.
3. Create original pictures as well as utilizing magazine pictures starting with letters of
the alphabet.
4. Practice fine and gross motor skills.
5. Use own ideas to create original artwork.
NAEYC Standards:
#1: Promoting child development and learning.
#4: Teaching and Learning
b. Using developmentally effective approaches
c. Understanding content knowledge in early education
d. Building meaningful curriculum
#5: Becoming a professional
Materials:
Paper (at least 26 pieces)
Alphabet manipulative (ie. Magnets)
Bucket
Markers/crayons/colored pencils
Magazines
Scissors
Glue
Book binding materials (for teacher only)
Procedure:
1. Sit children down quietly at the art table.
2. Tell them we will be creating an alphabet book to be kept in the classroom for
everyone to enjoy. Let them know that everyone is going to get a chance to help
decorate and create this book.
3. Using some sort of alphabet manipulative I will hold up each letter and go through
the alphabet and then place them all into a bucket. Then I will have the children
come up and pick out a letter from the bucket; each child will have the same number
of letters, whether it is 1 or 4.
4. I will leave the letter “A” to do as an example in front of the class. I will place a
piece of paper on the board and write the letter “A.” Then I will ask the children for
examples of things that start with “A.” I will draw these objects on the paper to show
the children what I am expecting of them.
5. Then I will allow the children to decorate their pages in the alphabet book. I will
make sure that the children write their name on their page so that we can remember
who did what part of the book.
6. We will continue to pick letters out of the bucket until they are all gone or there is an
odd number left. The leftover odds we will do as a class so that all the children have
the same number of pages in the book.
7. Then I will have the children help me choose a title for the book. I will create a title
page and create the alphabet book to be made available in the classroom.
Student Product:
The students will not have their own personal copies of the book, unless funding is
available to make copies for every child. The alphabet book will be kept in the classroom so that
the children can look at it and appreciate their artwork while practicing their alphabet
recognition.
Special Needs:
 Children might need help using scissors and glue
 Children might need someone watching over them to make sure they are drawing
pictures of the correct letters
Extensions:
1. We could create a number book for the classroom as well.
2. This project could lead the children to wanting to create more books.
Assessment:
1. Did the child find correct pictures that start with each letter of the alphabet?
2. Was the child able to use the media to create pictures for each letter of the alphabet?
3. Did the children seem to take pride in their work and enjoy the assignment? (Can
possibly be seen at a later time if children use the book again or are motivated to
create another book)
