Interpretive Planning
Karsh: Image Maker (PGC, 2009) – co-wrote the interpretive plan for the travelling
exhibition Karsh: Image Maker, jointly with the Canada Museum of Science and
Technology.
Studio K: A Karsh Experience (PGC, 2009) – was the principal interpretive planner
for this programming/exhibition space (at Library and Archives Canada) that focused
on Yousuf Karsh’s early work with theatre.
Family Portraits: immigration & identity (PGC, 2008) – created the community
engagement project that involved new immigrant families in Ottawa and Halifax
creating family portraits, resulting in an exhibition, video, brochure, and school
program.
Interpretive Strategy (PGC, 2005) – developed a detailed interpretive strategy for
the development of the long-term galleries in a major new national museum (project
delayed). Researched ‘best practices’ in the selection of interpretive technologies.
Cool 60s Design (CMC 2004) – interpretive planner in the development team for an
exhibition on Craft and Design in the 1960s. Assisted in research, text writing, and
developing interactive units.
Archaeology Discovery Centre (VM 2001-2002) – conceived and planned a
significant new space in the Vancouver Museum used for archaeology programs and
public lectures/workshops. Worked closely with local First Nations partners,
monitored contract interpretive planners, and was senior museum liaison with the
exhibit designers. Established a ‘pilot project’ laboratory to test various interpretive
strategies.
Joyce Walley Learning Centre (VM 2001-02) – assisted in acquiring significant
funding for a major new educational space at the Vancouver Museum through the
production of grant proposals. Developed interpretive plans for the room and the
‘learning units’, working closely with various stakeholders, including the education
community, First Nations elders and representatives, cultural groups, and specialty
historical groups. Managed and monitored the design process, identified work for
contracting out, monitored contractors, and was a senior member of the team
redeveloping the Vancouver Historical Galleries (a related project).
Jade (VM 2000) – wrote and delivered the gallery enhancements for a major
exhibition highlighting masterworks of Chinese Jade, including a gallery guide, audio
program (in four languages), and discovery room (in conjunction with the BC jade
mining community).

Honouring the Basketmakers (VM 2001-02) – assisted in acquiring funding for
this exhibition and assisted programmers from the Musqueam, Squamish, and TsleilWaututh First Nations in developing exhibition themes and resources.
Portrait V2K (VM 1999) – assisted in the planning of the City of Vancouver’s
millennium project, resulting in teacher materials, programming leading to exhibition
material, publication, and website.
Backyard Biodiversity (VM 1999) – assisted in the development of the exhibition,
liaising with community groups to solicit support and information.
Hello Again! (VM 1998) – planned, wrote, and delivered ancillary materials for this
recycled art exhibition, including the discovery room and the exhibition ‘program
newspaper’.
The Teen Age (VM 1994) – developed interpretive plan for an historical look at
teenagers in Vancouver from the 1920s, 1950s, and the 1990s. Liaised with
community groups, especially youth groups. Note: this exhibition did not proceed
past the development stage.
Stone, Bone, Antler, and Ivory (McM 1993) – assisted in the content and
programming development of this Inuit art exhibition.
Face to Face (McM 1992)– assisted in the content development of the portraiture
exhibition Face to Face.
St. Michael’s Hospital Centenary exhibition (1992) – co-curated an exhibition at
the historic Toronto hospital. Found and selected artifacts, researched stories and
histories using the hospital archives, interviewed doctors, nurses, and
administrators, designed the floorplan and case specifications, wrote label copy, and
planned the opening event.
Canadian Historical Galleries (Art Gallery of Ontario, 1991) – developed ‘signpost’
interpretive centres to place art in historical context. Developed audio programs in
Group of Seven gallery. Assisted with the research and development of the ‘salon
hanging’. Conducted audience research project in connection with computer terminal
use in the Group of Seven gallery.
Management
Portrait Gallery of Canada, Education Curation (2007-2009). Assisted in settin
goals and direction of the education programs, provided interpretive and educational
materials to support the activities of Exhibitions, wrote web content, and established
ties with the education and cultural communities. Recruited, trained, and evaluated
educators. Maintained budgets, identified areas and projects for consultant and
contract work and followed through with hiring and supervision.
Vancouver Museum Education and Public Programs Department (1998-2002).
Re-instated an Education Department at the country’s largest civic museum, after a
four-year absence in programming. Set priorities, developed mandates, reestablished ties with the education community. Hired program staff and supported

their progress. Senior interpretive planner within the Museum. Recruited, trained,
and evaluated volunteer educators. Reported progress to the Board, both in oral and
written form. Liaised with other Museum departments, most closely with curatorial
and marketing. Maintained budgets, identified areas and projects for consultant and
contract work and followed through with hiring and supervision, and wrote grant
proposals for my department as well as for the Museum. Was responsible for the
care and maintenance of a teaching collection of over 2000 artifacts, with its own
acquisition budget, accession process, and database. Organized and chaired various
meetings, including regular departmental action meetings, advisory council
meetings, and exhibition development meetings.
McMichael School Programs Department (1992-1993). Managed the daily
operations of a large school program department, with three paid full-time educators
and over 40 docents reporting to me. Scheduled tours, training, and planned
development work in my area. Liaised with other departments, especially curatorial.
Was part of the editing team that produced departmental publications. Chaired
various meetings.
Publications & Reports
Our Country, Our Parliament
Article (InterpScan, November 2005) – “Warming up to a cool technology”, article
about PDAs as an interpretive tool in museums and other cultural sites.
Comic Books (Canada Post Corporation) – develop, write and work with illustration
on the comic book Perf and Friends, a publication that is sent to the 60,000 members
of the Corporation’s Stamp Club.
Interpretive Technology Report (Portrait Gallery of Canada) – researched and
wrote a report on the ‘best practices’ in the field of new interpretive technologies.
Newletters (Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences) –
researched, wrote and edited stories and listings for the quarterly newsletter for an
academic foundation.
Cultural Policy Profiles (Department of Canadian Heritage) – researched, wrote
and edited over fifty country profiles for ministerial use in policy preparation, Briefing
Book inclusion, and departmental use.
PAGSE Symposium booklet 2003 & 2004 – edited and managed the design and
production process of annual booklets produced in conjunction with the national
symposia organized through the Partnership Group for Science and Engineering.
Program brochures – planned, wrote, and supervised the design and production of
program brochures for the McMichael and the Vancouver Museum. Worked closely
with design and marketing to achieve a strategic product within a specific budget.
Educational materials for teachers –wrote and/or edited several teacher
resources, such as the Pre-Visit Resource for teachers and students visiting the
National Capital Region (for the National Capital Commission), First Nations Artists

teacher resource package (for the McMichael Canadian Art Collection), the ESL slide
kit (McMichael, in conjunction with Parks Canada), and the Archaeology in the
Classroom activity book (Vancouver Museum).
Adoption Reunion articles – wrote and edited articles for use by the BC provincial
Adoption Reunion Registry (an agency of the Ministry of Social Services) and posted
on their webpage, included in client materials, and for use during workshops.
Children’s Programs
Karsh: Image Maker Programs (PGC/CSTM, 2009) Oversaw the development and
delivery of portrait-related programs during this program (an off-shoot of Festival K,
an Ottawa-based series of events and exhibitions celebrating photographer Yousuf
Karsh).
Studio K: Programs; Family Portraits Programs; In Your Face Programs
(PGC, 2007-2009) – wrote and oversaw delivery of school programs at the Portrait
Gallery programming space at Library and Archives Canada.
Portraits in the Classroom (PGC, 2007) Professional Development Workshops –
wrote, developed and delivered portrait-related workshops and ancillary materials for
teachers.
Capital Treasure Hunt (NCC, 2006) – wrote and managed production on a
downtown treasure hunt for teenagers visiting Ottawa from outside the National
Capital Region. The map is a stand-alone available at the Capital Info Centre.
Created an advisory group of teens to guide development.
Teachers Pre-Visit Resource (NCC, 2005) – wrote and managed production on a
pre-visit teacher’s resource package for classes visiting Ottawa from outside the
National Capital Region. The resource includes games, background materials, and
curriculum materials. Conducted all formative evaluation for resource.
Canada Hall Self-Guided Program (CMC 2004) – researched, wrote, and managed
production of a comic book self-guided program for the CMC’s Canada Hall.
Developed and designed attendant activities and ancillary teacher materials.
First Peoples Hall Self-Guided Program (CMC 2004) – researched, wrote, and
coordinated design and fabrication of hands-on activities, activity sheets, and
teacher overview materials using the new First Peoples Hall.
Archaeology programs (VM 1999-2002)– designed and managed several different
archaeology programs geared to fit into various curriculum guidelines, each lasting
between 45-90 minutes and using the Archaeology Discovery Centre. All programs
use themes of discovery and storytelling to answer the question, “how do we know
what we know about the past?”
Backyard Biodiversity (VM 2000)– designed and managed two different school 4590 minute programs using games to discover the complexity of local biodiversity,
and to promote student action to preserve it.

Through My Eyes (VM 1998)– wrote, delivered, and managed an hour and a half
program designed for grades 4-6, exploring issues of cultural ownership, copyright,
and provenance through the works and words of various First Nations community
members
City Kids (VM 1998)– designed and delivered programs for K-6, using the identities
of Vancouver children from 1901 to involve kids in the social history of their
neighbourhoods.
Hello Again! (VM 1999)– designed and managed a series of school programs using
art and recycling to reveal underlying issues of environmental awareness.
National Aboriginal Day (VM 1998) – produced a day long event inviting grade
four students to immerse themselves in First Nations culture through the storytelling,
music, magic, and art of the local communities
Night of the Mummy (VM 1999) – designed, delivered, and supervised overnight
programs for grade 7s that debunk archaeology myths while exploring ancient
civilization content.
Summer Day Camps (VM 1999-2002) – designed and supervised the delivery of
week-long day camps for 8-12 year olds featuring various themes such as insects,
archaeology, and paleontology.
Adult Programs
CAGE National Symposium 2009 – organized the program for the annual national
conference of the Canadian Art Gallery Educators Group.
Canadian Postal Museum Tour (CMC 2003) – researched and wrote adult tour for
the Canadian Postal Museum.
Partnership Group for Science and Engineering (PAGSE) Symposium 2003 &
2004 – assisted in the planning and delivery of ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’ symposia
featuring researchers from universities across Canada. Roundtable discussions,
speakers, evening reception.
Jade Tour (VM 2000) – designed twenty minute adult/family tour, featuring the
exhibition Jade (originating at the National Art Gallery of Canada).
Festa Italiano (VM 1998) – in conjunction with the Royal British Columbia Museum,
supervised the coordination of a week-long programming event featuring music, film,
craft demonstrations, lectures, and theatre. Produced with the Vancouver Italian
community.
Sunrise Ceremony (VM 1997-99) – in conjunction with local First Nations bands
and communities, managed an event featuring a ceremonial blessing and breakfast
featuring dancing, singing, and free admission to the Museum. And, yes, in June,
sunrise really is somewhere around 4:30 in the morning and we still were able to
attract fifty or more participants.

Specialty Programs
First Peoples Hall Animation Project (CMC 2004) – researched, wrote, and liaised
with designers and fabricators to create an animator-delivered program for casual
visitors to the First Peoples Hall.
Archaeology in the Classroom (Vancouver Museum/Vancouver Maritime Museum,
2001) – designed and delivered day-long event for 60 teachers, using archaeology
as a starting point for exploring mathematics, science, social studies and language
arts. Group work and discussion featured prominently, with plenty of take-home
ideas.
Vancouver 101 (VM 1999) – designed and delivered 90 minute program designed
for adults who speak ESL, using Vancouver Historical Galleries to explore issues of
cultural identity, racism, and citizenship.
Corporate family events (VM 1999-2002) – designed large-scale events bringing
together fun programming, food, and promotional sales. Thematically tied to an
exhibition, these events were joint efforts between programming, development, and
marketing departments.
Teacher events (McM 1992-VM 1998-2002)– designed and delivered various
teacher nights and Professional Development programs, ranging from snappy
promotional evening parties to in-depth educational experiences (see Archaeology in
the Classroom)
ESL at the McMichael (1992)– designed and delivered 90 minute program using
Canadian art and landscape to explore issues of national identity.
Special Needs at the McMichael (1993)– designed and delivered 2 hour program
for adults with developmental disabilities with exploration of gallery artwork
supported by creative studio time.
ESL at the ROM (1992) – designed and delivered weekly programs for college level
ESL students at the Royal Ontario Museum in addition to implementing a national
survey of ESL programs in cultural institutions. Used almost all galleries, with one
class entirely student-led.

training programs for volunteer educators, including issues such as communication
strategies, learning styles, conservation and handling objects, reaching new
audiences, and detailed workshops outlining specific subjects pertaining to exhibition
areas.
Workshops (1994-2000) “Coping with Adoption Reunions”, “Research Techniques in
Adoption Records”, and “Raising Adopted Children”, for Greater Vancouver Family
Services, Adoption Reunion Registry and Adoption Agency.
Presentation “New Audiences: Paying Attention to Speakers of ESL in Your
