Conflict in Relationships - understand it, transform it
Why do we find ourselves having the same conflict reactions over and over again? Why is
conflict not just about two angry people but involves the groups we belong to as well? How
do our families, schools, work environments and Christian communities keep us locked in
destructive conflict or equip us for conflict transformation? Are there any tools or strategies
that can help us not to run away from or deny conflict, but to embrace its transforming
potential? What are the larger religious and cultural forces at work?
Through instruction, self-awareness quizzes, and learning exercises, Dr Sara Savage and Dr
Eolene Boyd-MacMillan invite you to consider your biological, social, emotional and cognitive
reactions to conflict and to consider how they play out in diverse conflict situations. There is
no blame or shame in our default reactions, but relief in recognising them and realising that
we do not have to be trapped in them. Having pioneered (with Psychology and Religion
Research Group colleague, Dr Jose Liht) a holistic training programme for conflict
transformation, Sara and Eolene will introduce a new framework for seeing ourselves, other
people and the world we live in, teaching participants how to use 'IC' as a fundamental life
skill for conflict transformation. This conference will present insights from their latest book
coming out in February 2010.
Dr. Sara Savage is Senior Research Associate with the Psychology and Religion Research
Group Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, associate lecturer in the Faculty of
Divinity, Cambridge, and Associate Director of the Cambridge Institute for Applied
Psychology and Religion. A social psychologist, her current work focuses on the social and
cognitive aspects of religious radicalisation and conflict resolution. Other research focuses on
worldview of young people published in Making Sense of Generation Y, 2006), action
research in a range of religious and church organizations (published in the Human Face of
Church, 2007), initiatives in pastoral counselling, pastoral theology and church, and conflict
transformation action research among senior church leaders of differing religious orientations
(2008) published in Conflict in Relationships (forthcoming) pertaining to interpersonal conflict.
Formerly a dancer and choreographer, Sara has an ongoing interest in the arts and media.
Dr. Eolene Boyd-MacMillan is Research Associate with the Psychology and Religion
Research Group, Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, an Associate with the
Cambridge Institute for Applied Psychology and Religion, an associate lecturer in the
Cambridge Theological Federation, and associate lecturer with the School of Health,
Department of Counselling and Psychotherapy, University of Edinburgh. A counselling
psychologist and practical theologian, her current work explores the intersection of religious
and spiritual issues with mental health care as well as conflict transformation at the local and
national levels. Other research focuses on spiritual transformation (in Transformation, 2006),
social and personal psychological processes in faith communities (in the Human Face of
Church, 2007), and conflict transformation among senior church leaders of differing religious
orientations (in Conflict Transformation, 2008) and in diverse inter-personal contexts (in
Conflict in Relationships, forthcoming). Formerly, Eolene worked in the White House and US
Department of Treasury, in hospital chaplaincy, and has an abiding interest in the partnership
of micro and macro systems to promote human flourishing.
