Manitoba CTHS Yearling Sale
- Darlene Wedge
The 2009 CTHS (Manitoba Division) Yearling Sale will be held on Sunday, September 06 at the Assiniboia Downs grandstand
starting at 2:00 PM.
45 yearlings (42 Manitoba breds, 2 Kentucky breds and 1 Alberta bred) will be offered for sale - 5 colts, 14 geldings and 26 fillies.
The top 3 consignors this year are all long time supporters and consignors to the local sale who are aware of what is required in the
Manitoba market. Their yearlings are always well prepared and presented. Top consignor is Dr. Betty Hughes with 7 yearlings while
Ziprick Thoroughbreds and Kelly Halliday are tied for 2 nd and 3rd with 5 apiece.
Candy Ride (Arg), undefeated graded stakes winner and world record holder for the mile in 1:31 flat and co-leading first crop sire of
graded stakes winners and stakes winners, sired hip # 6, a gelding out of Notable Crusader. Notable Crusader was unraced but full
brother Notable Sword is a multiple stakes winner.
Hip 21 is a filly by Sarava – Tower of Babble. Sarava (Wild Again) won the Belmont S-G1 and his first foals are 3 year olds of 2009.
Tower of Babble was unraced but full sister Phone Chatter (by Phone Trick) was champion 2 year old filly in the US winning the
Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies and earning over $838,000.
K5 Stable, Inc has consigned hip # 9, a colt by Consolidator – Only Dreaming. Consolidator (Storm Cat) won the Lane’s End
Breeders’ Futurity G1 and San Felipe S G2 (by 6 ½ lengths breaking a 26 year old track record) ; his first foals are 2 year olds of
2009. Only Dreaming captured the Winnipeg Futurity, Buffalo S, CTHS Sales S (2yo fillies), and Jack Hardy Stake plus being stakes
placed both in Winnipeg and Ontario with earnings over $144,000.
Dams of the following hip #s produced 2008 Manitoba bred stake winners.
 27 – Going Commando – Bashful Dancer. The dam’s first foal Spying Eyes won J W Sifton S, Gold Strike Mile S and was
3rd in the Frank Arnason Sire S earning $72,261. Bashful Dancer herself won the R C Anderson and was 3rd in the Frank
Arnason Sire S
 25 – Going Commando – Atholton. Bella Mariella won Gold Strike Fillies Mile S, was 2 nd in both the R C Anderson and
Hazel Wright Sire S; at 2 she won the CTHS Sales S and was 3 rd in Buffalo S and Frank Aranson Sire S and has made almost
$56,000. Half sister Bashful Dancer (hip 27) is also a stakes winner.
 14 – Bold ‘N Flashy – Prospecting Lady. Out of 3 starts at 2, One on One won the CTHS Sales S and ran 2 nd in the Buffalo S
earning $32,384. A full brother to this hip # Flash Fire ran 3 rd in the 2004 CTHS Sales S.
 28 - Ran South – Belle’s Secret. First foal Custody Battle won the Frank Arnason Sire S, placed in the Gold Strike Mile S
and earned over $30,000. Belle Secret herself was a stakes placed winner.
 29 - Quadrophonic Sound – Chickabi. First foal Blueberry Blonde won the initial running of the Hazel Wright Sire S and
earned over $25,000 in 08.
An interesting twist is having a Kentucky bred sired by a Manitoba based stallion. Hip 5 is by Battle Cat out of North East Belle by
Beau Genius. This colt’s half brother Leonides is a multiple graded stakes placed winner while his dam’s ½ brother is North East
Bound a multiple graded stakes winner with earnings in excess of $1.3 million.
Hip 23 – Hurricane Center – Walkin’ On by can boast that the name Big Brown appears in her pedigree; Big Brown was named
champion 3-year old colt in the U.S. by virtue of winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness S, Florida Derby, Haskell Invitational, etc.
Pedigree suggests that Hip 30 Fabulous Champ – Class and Power should be speedy. Fabulous Champ ran 6 furlongs in 1:07 and
5.5 furlongs in 1:02.3 – he is stakes winner and sire of 14 stakes winners. Class and Power is a stakes placed winner who set ntr at
RET 4.5 furlongs in 53.76 while 3rd dam Mighty Classy set ntr at ALB 7 furlong in 1:21 and her foal Join Up set ntr at La Mesa 5
furlong in 56.2.
