1. How did cars change in the 1960s when compared to the cars of the 1950s?
Cares became cheaper, smaller and more compact…better gas mileage
2. Who was Ray Kroc and how did he revolutionize the fast food industry? What other changes to the American diet
occurred in the 1960s? Started to franchise McDonald’s and started the fast food revolution. Food in the 1960s became
more sugary, processed, and quick and easy to prepare.
3. What was the British Invasion, and what bands were associated with it?
British bands such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Yardbirds came to America
4. How did the Beat movement influence the hippie movement of the 1960s?
The beats of the 1950s had similar values of peace and love.
5. What was the hippie movement, and what were some of the goals and values of the movement?
Hippies promoted peace, love, civil rights, equality, and protection of the environment. They had long hair and wore
colorful clothes such as tie dye shirts. They were opposed to the Vietnam War and protested against it. Many hippies
experimented with drugs.
6. How did fashions change in the 1960s?
Fashions became more colorful, skirts became shorter, and more synthetic fabrics were used.
7. What was the impact of Motown Records, and who were some of the artists that were signed to that record label?
Motown was the first African American owned record company. Motown artists popularized the “Motown Sound” –
Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin.
8. What was important about the Summer of Love in San Francisco in 1967?
It was a large gathering of Hippies and celebrated hippie culture.
9. Compare music of the Early 60s with music of the Later 60s. What styles were popular in the early decade, and how
did it change?
Music of the early 60s was more similar to the rock of the 1950s. Later 6os music was more psychedelic and
experimental. Styles of the early 50s were also similar to the 1950s, later styles were influenced by the hippie movement.
10. How did films of the 1960s become more artistic and innovative?
Filmmakers were able to create more creative stories and not follow the studio standards and the Hays code.
11. How did technology like the transistor radio and the 8-track tape deck change the way Americans could enjoy music?
Music could now be taken anywhere.
12. How would you describe television in the 1960s? Name one or two shows that support your description.
It was kind of absurd and silly – Mr. Ed and Gilligan’s Island were popular.
13. How did advertising for consumer products change in the 1960s, and what was the impact of this change?
Advertisers used sex and humor to sell products, rather than just information as in the 50s
14. What were some of the events that signaled the end of the 1960s?
Manson murders, Altamont festival, Deaths of Hendrix and Joplin.
