JOB SPECIFICATION
1.
Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisation's goals (its
expected outcome and how it is achieved).
The Interventional Fellow is responsible for assisting in the provision of vascular and interventional
radiology services at The Royal Adelaide Hospital under the guidance of an Interventional
Consultant Radiologist.
This is an advanced training position for a Radiologist who has passed FRANZCR PART II
examination or equivalent and has completed 4 years of accredited training.
The position involves specific experience and training in Interventional Radiology including
endovascular procedures, CT and fluoroscopic guided non-vascular intervention, percutaneous liver
procedures, nephrostomy insertion and abscess drainage The fellow will spend at least 60-80% of
each week in the angiography suite or performing Interventional CT/US procedures.. The remaining
20 - 40 % of each week’s training must be spent in general radiology training.
The fellow will be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, conduct research/audit
projects and will be encouraged to present at national and international meetings.

Reporting/Working Relationships (to whom the person reports, staff for whom the
person is responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within
the organisation).
Responsible to the Clinical Director Radiology and reporting to the supervising Radiologist. The
incumbent liaises with radiological and other medical staff, radiographers, nursing staff, clerical
officers, and any other appropriate person in order to provide an effective Interventional Radiology
service.

Special Conditions (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent
overtime, etc.).
May be required to work outside of normal working hours.
Will be required for after hours call and recall.

Statement of Key Outcomes and Associated Activities. (Group into major areas of
responsibility/activity and list in descending order of importance).
Under the guidance of, and in consultation with, the Supervising Radiologist:
Ensure that effective and efficient Interventional Radiology services are provided by:
 Assessing the appropriateness of examination requests.
 Planning the examination with relevant staff.
 Supervising examinations.
 Prereading all examinations prior to reporting by consultant Radiologist.
 Assist in the reporting of examinations.
 Participate in consultation with other senior staff the development of procedures and protocols.
 Provide a consultative service to referring clinicians regarding patient management.
Ensure that effective teaching programmes are in place by:
 Participating in postgraduate teaching programmes.
 Participating in Department and interdepartmental research studies specific to Interventional
Radiology.
 Participating in multidisciplinary clinical meetings advising on and discussing Radiological
procedures and examinations.
 Preparing and delivering teaching conferences for appropriate trainee medical officers and other
appropriate staff.
 Participating in appropriate clinical conferences as designated by the Director of Radiology.
 Developing an elective research project approved by the Director of Radiology.
Ensure that policies, procedures, standards and the physical environment complies with the
relevant legislation by:
 Maintaining a safe work environment with a sound knowledge and understanding of OHS&W
principles
 Maintaining a safe work environment, minimising the risk of electrical/mechanical hazards and
radiation hazards and radiation exposure by complying with the requirements of the Radiation
Protection and Control Act (S.A.) of 1982 and regulations under the Act.
Contribute to the safeguard of confidential information and intellectual property of the
Hospital by:

Adhering to the South Australian Health Commission Act 1976 and Code of Conduct for
Public Sector Employees to maintain strict confidentiality regarding client/patient/staff
information.


PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Eligible to be registered as a Medical Specialist in South Australia or a Registrar in their final year of
training.
Must be eligible to be licensed to practise Radiology under the Radiation Control Act.
PERSONAL ABILITIES/APTITUDE/SKILLS:
Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to accept and implement change.
Ability to work in a team environment.
The ability to promote teambuilding.
EXPERIENCE:
Wide general or specialised experience in any areas of Radiology.
Experience of teaching postgraduates and/or undergraduates.
Experience participating in multidisciplinary clinical meetings.
KNOWLEDGE:
A broad knowledge of legislation relevant to the department including EEO and OHS&W.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Completion of all examinations required by the Royal Australian New Zealand College of
Radiologists for Membership of the College.
PERSONAL ABILITIES/APTITUDE/SKILLS:
EXPERIENCE:
Experience publishing articles in recognised journals.
Documented performance of research projects.
KNOWLEDGE:
