Secondary Locations UCI Medical Center – Division Pediatric Neurology Orange, CA Phone Number 949 824 5013 Fax Number dwalsh@uci.edu Email Address I. NATURE OF AGENCY Public X Private Profit Non-profit X Internship Other (e.g., church supported) General description of the agency, including its purpose, function, and specific programs Division Pediatric Neurology at UCI Medical Center: Center for Neuro-Developmental Studies operates a weekly outpatient clinic at the UCI Neuropsychiatric Center. The treatment team consists of a neuropsychologist, behaviorist, pediatric neurologist and pediatric psychiatrist. The team examines adults and children diagnosed with developmental disabilities. The UCINDS Clinic is for assessment only –students would see 3-4 patients weekly. UCINDS Clinic’s main purpose is diagnosis. Students will participate in making treatment recommendations but those recommendations will be carried out by other professionals. Practicum students complete cognitive assessments and adaptive ratings with patients. Students would then share their preliminary results with the treatment team. Students would then participate in the multi-disciplinary team's conference about each patient. Supervision will be the responsibility of David M. Walsh, PsyD, ABPP. Dr. Walsh is a licensed psychologist (PSY 18645) and will provide 1 hour of weekly individual supervision per practicum student. The interdisciplinary case reviews are overseen by a neuropsychologist, behaviorist and board certified psychiatrist; as such, it is regarded as group supervision (1-2 hours weekly). This opportunity would be appropriate for students interested in clinical, developmental or neuropsychology. We are also confident that the UCINDS Clinic offers an outstanding training opportunity. Students would develop an understanding of DSM-IV criteria for mental retardation, pervasive developmental disorders, etc. Students would also benefit from the opportunity to assess patients with a wide array of neurological and medical difficulties. Most importantly, students would benefit from their participation on the multi-disciplinary team since it will provide them with various perspectives concerning treatment, diagnosis and prognosis. Students would also have the option to attend available didactic training opportunities at UCIMC. Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior at UCI Main Campus: The Department of Psychiatry is examining genetic, architectural, and biochemical brain abnormalities in major depression, bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia (NIMH sponsored research). This is a post-mortem study; therefore, all samples must be characterized prior to inclusion in the study. This process is referred to as a "psychological autopsy" and involves and extensive review of decedent's medical records, psychiatric records, and information from family interviews. Actual client contact is with patients’ family members. Potentially, practicum students would review medical and psychiatric records and interview decedents' family members. Students would assign a provision DSM-IV diagnosis and review their conclusions with supervisor. Actual client contact is with decedent’s bereaved family. For purposes of clarification, even though this is a post-mortem study, students 1 D:\533564913.doc would NOT be exposed to any lab environments. UCI Psychological Autopsy Project’s main purpose is diagnosis. However, students will have the opportunity to observe and evaluate the treatment steps taken over the course of the person's mental illness. Supervision will be the responsibility of David M. Walsh, PsyD, ABPP. Dr. Walsh is a licensed psychologist (PSY 18645) and will provide 1 hour of weekly individual supervision per practicum student. The interdisciplinary case reviews are overseen by Dr. Walsh and board certified psychiatrist; as such, it is regarded as group supervision (1-2 hours weekly). This opportunity would be appropriate for students interested in clinical and forensic psychology. We are confident that students would develop a clear understanding of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, knowledge of symptoms associated with various disorders and benefit from exposure to both psychiatric and psychological treatment strategies. It also offers a unique opportunity to examine the risk factors for suicide. The family interviews would provide students with a low-risk opportunity to develop their counseling skills. Students would also have the option to attend available didactic training opportunities at the College of Medicine. NOTE: Students would be required to participate at BOTH sites.
