Living in the Middle Ages
The Canterbury Tales
The reason why the Prologue is the most important part of The Canterbury
Tales is because it gives such an accurate portrayal of the type of people that
made up Fourteenth Century England. Through your reading and
discussion, you should have a good description of each pilgrim making the
trip to Canterbury, their status and role in society, and the goodness of their
character. You will show your mastery of this knowledge by creating an
image of Fourteenth Century life. Begin by drawing structures to represent
the “3 Estates” (the nobles, clergy and commons), and fill in the travelers in
their appropriate positions. Each traveler should be represented by a symbol
that explains who they are and what they enjoyed doing. (Be sure to take
into consideration Chaucer’s satirical descriptions). You must also have a
quote that explains their “true” character – what are they known for, whether
they’re honest or dishonest. This assignment should be neat and colorful
and should be poster board size. You will be graded on the accuracy of your
quotes and symbols as well as the creativity of your poster.
