LEVEL 1: First year students in French or Spanish
LEVEL 2: Second year students
LEVEL 3: Third year students
LEVEL 4: Fourth year students
NATIVE SPEAKERS: French or Spanish for individual categories, music, play.
Native speaker students can only participate in the Native Speaker categories for poetry, prose and extemporaneous speaking, or in the Music and Play competitions.
SPECIFIC RULES
TIME: Each participant must be ready at the competition room at least fifteen minutes before the scheduled time. Participants who arrive late for their competition will NOT be able to participate.
Southeastern Louisiana University / the Department of Languages and Communication are not responsible or liable for participant’s disqualification due to late arrivals, transportation delays, bad weather, or any other unforeseen circumstance.
A.
INDIVIDUAL CATEGORIES : Each school may submit only ONE student per level in each language (Spanish or French). Level must reflect the number of years that the student has studied the language. No student can repeat at the same level. Students may enter only ONE individual event.
POETRY AND PROSE : 2 MINUTES for presentation/per student.
1. Selection must be poetry or prose for the appropriate competition, not to exceed 30
Lines for poetry and 200 words for prose.
2. A typed copy must be given to the judges before reciting.
3. Students are encouraged to memorize their selections, though this is not mandatory.

Otherwise equal. Students may hold a copy with the selection should it become necessary to refer to it.
EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING : MAXIMUM OF 3 MINUTES/per student .
The students will present/speak to a panel of judges on ONE topic prepared and selected from the list provided.
No questions are to be asked of the participant by the judges prior to the initiation of their presentation.
Afterward, the judges will ask the contestant questions pertaining to his/her chosen topic.
NATIVE SPEAKERS : A MAXIMUM OF 2 MINUTES FOR POETRY AND PROSE, AND 3 MINUTES
FOR EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING/ for presentation/per student.
1. Defined, as native speakers are those who have been speaking the language since birth. Native speaker students can only participate in the native speaker categories for poetry, prose and extemporaneous speaking, or in the regular music and play competitions. A native speaker contestant competing on a non native speaker category will be disqualified.
2. Regional accents/idiomatic expressions are admissible.
3. Competition will evaluate the participant’s range of vocabulary and the use of grammar that is frequently missed (i.e., the use of the subjunctive, if clauses, idiomatic expressions,
B. GROUP CATEGORIES : Each school may submit one group per category for each language,
French and Spanish. One solo or group of maximum 3 participants for music. One group of maximum 15 participants and 2 substitutes for drama/play. Students participating in individual categories are able to participate also in the group categories.
MUSIC : French/Spanish singing . Maximum time: 3 minutes. Only one group per school is allowed for this category for each language. Up to 3 participants per group/school, including an accompanist. School or students must bring their own instruments / accompaniment / tapes / CD players.
PLAY/THEATER: Maximum time: 15 minutes. Only one group per school is allowed for this category for each language. Up to 15 participants and 2 alternates per group/school.
Though not essential to a winning performance, bear in mind the artwork/creativity that may go into the creation of props or the use of live music. School or students must bring their own instruments / accompaniment / tapes / CD players, props/equipment.
IV.
Students will be judged on pronunciation, articulation, expression, ease of delivery, and appropriateness of selection. In the case of a tie, memorization is also taken into account, as is live accompaniment for the music category.
Please plan to stay for the ceremony after the competition, which may last until 2:30 – 3:00 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded for 1 st and 2 nd places on each category. Certificates will be awarded for 3 rd places. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
B.
There will be selected in three tiers.
Tier one: Schools with an enrollment of over 600 students or magnet schools.
Tier two: Schools with an enrollment of under 600 students.
Tier three: Bilingual or Immersion schools.

All entries must be received by fax on the official entry sheets, by e-mail (only word attachment), or postmarked by the deadline.

ABSOLUTELY NO SUBSTITUTIONS / DELETIONS after the deadline.
Registration fee: $ 15.00 per participant/per competition.
Please register early . Time and space for the festival are limited. Registration will be taken on a first coming first served basis. In the event that entry requests outnumber the maximum number of time slots available for a given category, selection will be made by the festival committee in such a way to provide the widest possible participation by the greatest number of schools. However, nor SLU, nor the Department of Foreign Languages can guarantee a time slot for a competition after the maximum number of available slots is filled.
VI. LUNCH
All participants are responsible for providing their own lunch. Just steps from the D-Vickers
Hall, there is a full food court at the Student Union with different food available. There are also many excellent restaurants in the Hammond area.
