UNESCO Cymru-Wales Workplace Learning Bursary Further particulars and details of how to apply 1. Aim of the Workplace Learning Bursary The aim of the bursary is to provide a workplace learning opportunity to a new entrant to research, heritage or education by completing a project that will assist the understanding and transmission to future generations of the values of inscribed or potential World Heritage Sites in Wales. 2. Description of the Project The project is funded by UNESCO Cymru-Wales. The successful candidate will be based at the Royal Commission in Aberystwyth. The project will involve collating, and where necessary, archiving the research already undertaken on the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site (and its Buffer Zone) in order to produce a guidebook to the World Heritage Site. Some further research may be needed. It is also proposed that the applicant works with the two archaeologists/historians funded by the Atlanterra/Green Mines Interreg Project, the Local Community, and Cadw in developing the understanding of the industrial settlements near the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The information abstracted will be compiled as a learning resource for the World Heritage Site and interpreted as part of the National Monuments Record of Wales database. The project will achieve its purpose by: Providing practical experience through workplace training and thereby enhancing the future employment prospects of the successful candidate Creating research resources which will enhance the knowledge base for World Heritage Sites in Wales Creating educational resources which will support the transmission of World Heritage Site values to future generations and enhance the understanding of science and technology Enhancing the management and conservation of World Heritage Sites The project will support UNESCO Cymru-Wales’s mission by contributing to peace, human development and sustainability through education, the sciences and culture: in this case by providing cultural and educational resources related to World Heritage and the technology of engineering. It will also contribute to UNESCO’s mission by communicating UNESCO’s work on World Heritage to the people and organisations of Wales. It will do this specifically by devising education and awareness programmes related to UNESCO work, promoting relevant research which draws on Welsh expertise and experience, and assisting new projects in Wales to benefit from UNESCO programmes. 3. Monitoring and Evaluation The project manager will be Stephen Hughes, Head of Survey and Investigation at the Royal Commission. The project will be subject to regular reviews by the Steering Group which is made up of representatives from the Royal Commission and its partner organisations. At the end of the period the successful candidate will be expected to provide information leading to the resolution of some of the present gaps in the knowledge of the construction, construction techniques and history of the canal and its surroundings. 4.
