Kilgarlin Center for the Preservation of the Cultural Record RARE BOOK CONDITION & PROPOSED TREATMENT SUMMARY Date: 10/10/2006 Conservator: Metzger/Baker Title: Gothic Ornaments in York Minster Imprint: 1831 Dimensions (H x W x Th): 34 x 29 x 4 cm CONDITION SUMMARY The book is a half style binding covered in thick calf leather and blue marbled paper with gold and blind tooling on the front cover and spine. The textblock is in good condition overall. The book contains 105 plates. The printers ink from the plate images has offset. One endband has become detached at the spine lining, but holds on to the textblock by a thread. The spine is detached at the back hinge, remaining attached fully at the front hinge, and there are two main tears in the spine leather. The back board attachment has weekend and the cord sewing supports are slightly visible. PROPOSED TREATMENT SUMMARY Consolidate the two tears on the leather spine with wheat starch paste. Reattach endband to the spine with long fiber paper. Rebuild half of a hollow tube with long fiber paper. Lift the leather on the back about 2 cm onto the board at the spine. Dye long fiber tissue to match the deteriorated leather color. Firm up the back board attachment with a long fiber paper hinge. Adhere the consolidated spine to the new hollow tube with wheat starch paste. AUTHORIZATION The undersigned requests and authorizes PCS/GSLIS University of Texas-Austin, Austin, TX, to undertake conservation treatment of the artifact described in the attached Condition Report according to the procedures outlined in the appended Treatment Proposal. In the event the Owner/Custodian authorizes PCS to proceed with the treatment recommended in the proposal such authorization shall be deemed to include acceptance by the depositor of the terms and conditions appearing in the original Authorization for Examination and Treatment.
