October, Mary’s Month of the Holy Rosary
Respect Life Month!
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER JOHN:
Dear Parish Family,
October is the Month of the Holy Rosary! Our St. Mike’s students, faculty and I will participate in a
“Living Rosary” on Friday, October 9th at 2 PM at Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine. Next Sunday, I will lead
our Religious Education students on a “Rosary walk” on our parish grounds at 9:30 AM. All students are to bring
a rosary to Religious Education. All are welcome to join us for both of these devotions. I thank our Legion of
Mary members who lead the rosary prior to a Sunday Mass. It would be good if we could offer the rosary
before each Sunday Mass for the specific intention of vocations to the priesthood within our diocese. If you
would like to lead the rosary before Mass, please let me know (472 – 8551).
Deacon Michael Condor - would like to thank the parishioners of the Basilica for the heartwarming reception
after Mass last Sunday. Both Barb and Deacon Mike enjoyed and appreciated all of the well wishes!
ATTENTION FRESHMEN IN HIGH SCHOOL / Sacrament of Confirmation - A reminder
that our Parents/Freshmen Meeting and Rite of Blessing for all freshmen in high school (Bishop
Carroll and Penn Cambria) will be held this Monday evening October 5 at 7 PM in St. Michael School Hall.
We will begin the preparation for Confirmation (to be received during Junior year) and discuss
the Freshman Retreat and ( Shycon- Senior High Youth Convention 2015) to be held on October 25.
Shycon, held at St. Francis University, draws 1000 + teenagers from throughout our Diocese and includes
Sunday Mass with Bishop Bartchak. I look forward to joining them. Thank you to Celeste Stolz,
Director of Religious Education, and Bishop Carroll Catholic High School for helping organize our
teenagers for this event.
Parish Pastoral Council - Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 PM in the rectory living room.
As we discussed at our meeting in September, we need to work to establish committees which will assist us in conducting
parish life in a more orderly way and which “report into” our Parish Council meetings. These committees include Christian
Service, Education/Evangelization, Maintenance, Stewardship, Life and Family and Liturgy. So far, we have
reestablished Maintenance and Liturgy. I invite all parishioners to consider their own gifts and talents as we identify new
members for each of these committees. MORE INFORMATION TO COME!!
Liturgy Committee Meeting – A meeting of the parish Liturgy Committee will be held Tuesday evening October 6 at 6:30
PM in the rectory. Liturgy Committee members include Jonathan Nagy, chair, Betty Seymour, Maggie Biter, Monica
Hogue, and Deacon Rick Golden.
Fall Adult Faith Education Classes - Deacon Richard Golden & Jane Golden will present an opportunity for
adult faith formation, “Wish You Knew the Bible Better? Genesis to Jesus” The classes will be presented in our
Basilica basement. This 7 week learning opportunity will begin Wednesday, October 7, at 6:30 PM. It is a course
designed by Dr. Scott Hahn of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. Registration/workbook cost is $12 and
participants are asked to bring their bibles. To register, call our Parish Office at 472-8551 or parish e-mail
(sherri0530@verizon.net) or Deacon Golden at rjgold@csrlink.net. or 495-9673.
Eucharistic Adoration – follows the 6 PM Mass each Thursday evening until 7:30 PM at our
Prince Gallitzin Chapel House. Spend some time with Jesus this week during our weekly Thursday hour of
Adoration.
Reminder - As you know, one of our greatest challenges is providing ongoing financial support to our parish
school. Did you know that in addition to the tuition paid by families, our Basilica parish offers $1832.22 per
child each year from our weekly Sunday collections? This extra cost to the parish is well worth it to provide our
children with the best education possible.
This gift from the parish is referred to as the “per pupil cost” or more accurately, the parish scholarship to our
children. So that this extra cost to the parish is acknowledged, all families are expected to agree to a yearly
“Memorandum of Understanding.” The yearly “Memorandum of Understanding” has been in place in all the
parishes and Catholic Schools of our diocese for years. I realize that it had not been properly implemented here.
The Memorandum makes clear that families will continue to enjoy this parish scholarship as long as they are
active parishioners, that is, families are participating in Sunday Mass and contributing to our parish.
To be clear…..If a family is 1) not registered 2) not regularly attending Mass, 3) not offering stewardship
(regular contribution), the Basilica of St. Michael is under no obligation to offer the scholarship. It will not be
offered. It is unfair to use our collection to assist those who do not pray with us or share in our common efforts of
stewardship. Those families will rightly need to pay the full non- parishioner/inactive rate to have their
children attend St. Michael Catholic School. I strongly encourage all families who have not had me sign their
Memorandum to do so throughout the Sundays of October. As always, serious situations of financial need may
be discussed with me. I want to have every child receive a Catholic education. Now is the time for all families
who have children in our school to return to a deeper practice of our faith and give a good example of
Catholic living to their children.
DUSTBUSTERS! - I thank those who have worked so hard to clean and reorganize our sacristies. Many parishes
have a group of dedicated parishioners who regularly offer help in the light cleaning of the church (basic dusting,
vacuuming, etc.) at weekly intervals. They are called Dustbusters! I would like to develop Dustbusters teams
here at St. Michael’s. If you would be able to donate some time to our parish for light cleaning of the church,
please contact our Sacristan, Maggie Biter at 472-6064. Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Today’s readings remind us that God is the Origin of life itself. Thank Him
throughout your life by serving others with your time, talent, and treasure.
LITURGICAL REFLECTION Moderation should be observed in the decoration of the altar. Flowers in Advent
are marked with moderation in anticipation of Christmas; floral arrangements for the altar are forbidden in Lent in
anticipation of Easter. Flowers and plants are always to be around the altar rather than on the altar table. During
the Liturgy of the Word the Book of the Gospels may be placed on the altar; for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the
chalice, paten, ciborium, corporal and purificator along with the Roman Missal are placed on the altar. Arranged
discreetly, there should be a microphone to amplify the priest’s voice.
General Instruction of the Roman Missal, Numbers 305 and 306.
A PAGE FROM OUR HISTORY
CONCLUSION - Sr. Pierre Greene’s Restoration in 1924 – 1926 of the Gallitzin Chapel House. While not
much of Gallitzin’s original furnishings remained on site at the chapel house, “the Sisters did manage to collect a
bit of furniture of the period in which Gallitzin did inhabit the place, along with a few mementoes of his with
which the chapel, living room and bedroom were furnished in the likeness of the original setting.” Burton During
the on-going restoration period, Sister Greene provided residence there for about eight young girls considering
vocations for the sisterhood. But that assignment was short-lived. After the formal re-opening of the renovated
Gallitzin Chapel House in 1926, at least two Sisters from Cresson lived there permanently to provide continuous
habitation and security, as well as welcome visitors and pilgrims with tours and talks about Fr. Gallitzin and his
Chapel-House. And so it was on Friday morning, October 15, 1926, that the Gallitzin Chapel & House,
historically sacred to the memory of the pioneer priest of the Alleghenies, Fr. Demetrius Gallitzin, were formally
Blessed by Bishop McCort; Holy Mass was celebrated there with a huge crowd of clergy and laity in attendance,
all hero worshipers of the saintly priest, most of whom were siting/standing in the surrounding antique cemetery,
unable to gain entry to the little chapel, that is except for a select few of the older residents of the parish who may
have been baptized by Fr. Gallitzin, and, of course, the Sisters responsible for seeing the restoration through to
completion. After all formalities were presented, the chapel & house were open to the public for the first time in
any recall of those present. This arrangement of Sisters living in one part of the Gallitzin House, once used as an
orphanage for homeless children, lasted until 1940, at which time the diocesan headquarters for the Propagation of
the Faith took over the house part of the buildings. The Sisters living there then moved to Our Lady of Loretto
Convent. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Sisters of Mercy once again resided in the Chapel House until 1993.
f.i.s.
P.S. One of the very first landscape undertakings by the Sisters was to plant Milkweek from seeds extracted from
local cuttings. Sr. Greene so-loved Monarch butterflies and knew that without the milkweed plant, these beautiful
denizens of the mountains could not reproduce and survive. Their plots were laid out in the old hitching grounds
just across the roadway from Fr. Gallitzin’s frame church; and along the banks south of the house facing the
Cresson Road. This colorful story was provided by Sr. Silverius Shields, venerable historian of the Mercies at
Cresson. f.i.s.
