Rodent Handling and Biomethodology
Workshops
These workshops are designed to instruct WSU students and personnel about basic rodent
handling, restraint and biomethodology including injections and blood sampling. Personnel
performing or assisting with research on rodents can benefit from such instruction. Participants
in this workshop will be instructed on:





Handling of rats or mice for daily care
Restraint of rats or mice for examination or procedures
Subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, and intramuscular injections
Blood sampling techniques
CO2 euthanasia, intravenous injections and oral gavage training may be added to this
workshop upon request at the time of registration.
Sessions are offered in Room 198, Laboratory Animal Resource Center at 2600 Grimes Way
(next to the bear facility) for:
Mouse Handling & Biomethodology:


September 8th  10am – 12pm
September 16th  12pm – 2pm
Rat Handling & Biomethodology:


September 9th  10am – 12pm
September 13th  12pm – 2pm
(NOTE: Each workshop is scheduled for 2 hours but the length of the workshop will vary depending on
the number of the participants and their previous experience. Please indicate if you would like to attend
rat training, mouse training or both. The same material will be covered at each mouse or rat session so
participants need only to sign up for one. Additional sessions will be offered on request and at the
beginning of each semester. All persons using animals at WSU will also need to attend the mandatory
Animal Awareness Seminar – go to http://campusvet.wsu.edu/training/ for additional information).

Training at alternative times is available if needed. Individual and group training on other
research techniques and with other animal species is also available on request. Please contact
