Boone County 4-H Livestock Superintendent Job Description PURPOSE: To organize and supervise judging, exhibits, and activities in livestock divisions at the Boone County Fair. SUPERINTENDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Early in Calendar Year Attend pre-fair meetings. Verbally contact judge by March 1 and inform Extension Office of judge's name, address, and phone number for a letter of confirmation of division, date, and fee. Contact trophy donors by March 1 to confirm their willingness to continue sponsorship and secure new donors, if needed. Notify Extension staff of trophy style preferences. Work with respective livestock committee in suggesting changes in fair book guidelines and/or show procedures. Review and approve final draft of your division's fair book copy by March 1. Supervise weigh-ins held in advance of fair, if applicable. Pre-fair Following county fair entry deadline, stall animals early July and submit to Extension Office or review class entries for small animals. Assist with pre- and post-fair cleanup for respective barns. Meet with herdsmanship judge, if applicable, to determine general building cleanliness guidelines. Assist exhibitors in following health guidelines. Fair Days Superintendent or a representative needs to be present during livestock arrival and departure times. Supervise fair weigh-in, if applicable. Work with Extension Office Assistant to break classes, develop a show bill, and list animals going through the auction, if applicable. Routinely check barns for livestock health concerns and contact the designated fair veterinarian, if necessary. Be available to answer questions from exhibitors, parents, leaders, and Extension staff. Work with 4-H Youth Committee representative to clarify any discrepancies in eligibility of animals or youth. Support herdsmanship and appropriate animal welfare practices for an attractive public display. If proper care of animals is not maintained, the superintendent (with committee decision) has the right to dismiss the animal from the fair. The 4H/FFA member will forfeit premium money, and participation in future fairs will be questioned. Show Day Prior to show, get ribbons, trophies, and judging books from the 4-H Office during the hours 8 a.m.-noon and 1 - 5 p.m. Check to see if showmanship donor is in attendance to present showmanship awards during the show. During show, designate a committee member to perform each of the following duties: a. Ring Announcer. b. Check 4-H'ers into the ring. c. Ring person to help exhibitors. d. Record ribbon placings (also be sure all no shows or changes are noted). e. Record champion placings for news releases. Return notebook to the 4-H Fair Office promptly following the show. Superintendent and working committee members are entitled to beverages during the show. Beverage order forms will be in your notebook or available from the 4-H office. Orient judge on day of show. Be sure judge gets refreshments. At conclusion of show, give judge the check, which is in the front of the judging book. Auction -- Beef, Sheep, Swine Find packer/buyers to submit bids for sale day. Encourage participation by buyers in auction. All market animals will be listed for sale unless the 4-H Office is notified otherwise. Determine animals being sold and sale order by Saturday at 3 p.m. Give to Extension Office Assistant. Post sale bill in respective barns. Direct traffic through barns and release correct animals to buyers. Superintendent MUST sign the load-out ticket prior to release. Post Fair Attend post-fair evaluation meeting and/or complete post-fair suggestion form. If unable to attend, designate a committee member to take your place. RESPONSIBILITIES OF STAFF: Provide rough drafts of fair book copy, a fair book to each superintendent (and committee members on request), collect fair entry forms, and tally number of entries. Prepare and send letter of confirmation to judges. Send news releases to media. Provide computer support of entries, classes, show bills, and auction listing. Group orders for ribbons and trophies and make available for the event. Calculate premiums. QUALIFICATIONS OF SUPERINTENDENT: Ability to work with adults and youth. Ability to organize and supervise.
