LCDR Terance J.W. Henkle USN-Ret
LCDR Henkle enlisted in the Navy on June 27th 1980. He Attended Aviation Antisubmarine
Warfare Operator (AW) Class A School at Memphis Tenn. He then proceeded to Naval Aircrew
Candidate School located at Pensacola Fla. LCDR Henkle transferred to Helicopter Replacement
Squadron One (HS-1) at Jacksonville Fla. for Search and Rescue Swimmer School/CSAR
training, and then attended CV-ASWM school in Dam Neck VA.
His first assignment was aboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) from 1981 to 1983. During
his tour, he qualified as a SH-3G/H Helicopter Aircrewman, CV-ASWM analyst,
briefer/debriefer, and advanced to Second Class Petty Officer. LCDR Henkle did a 9 month
deployment from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal and then
into the Indian Ocean and back to Virginia Beach. Following training at the Maritime Patrol
Replacement Squadron (VP-30), LCDR Henkle was assigned to VP-FIVE from 1984 - 1988.
During his tour, he was advanced to First Class Petty Officer and held various positions in the
command including Tactics Leading Petty Officer, 14B44 Acoustic and 2F87 Weapons System
and DARTS Instructor, AW Division Leading Petty Officer and Training and finally VP-5s
Operations Leading Petty Officer.
In 1988, LCDR Henkle was accepted into the Enlisted Educational Advancement Program
(EEAP) and attended Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Florida from 1988 to 1990. He
earned an Associate in Arts (Biology) and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
He then transferred to USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) during Operations DESERT SHIELD
and DESERT STORM. During this tour LCDR Henkle was then accepted into the Enlisted
Commissioning Program (ECP) and attended Old Dominion University, earning a Bachelor of
Science Degree (Biology ((Marine)) with a minor in Oceanography) and was commissioned as an
Ensign (Oceanographer 1800).
Following Basic Oceanography Accession Training (BOAT), LCDR Henkle's first assignment
as an Oceanographer was at the Tactical Support Center (TSC) Rota Spain from 1993 until 1995.
He held assignments as Operations Division Officer, Projects and Exercises Officer and acting
Operations Officer. There, he provided oceanographic and weather support to deployed P-3
Orion’s and deployed to Saudi Arabia as P-3 Detachment Officer in Charge. He also deployed as
CTF-67/P-3C Overland Tactical Reconnaissance Liaison Officer at the Combined Air Operations
Center (CAOC) Vicenza Italy during Operations Task Force Ranger, DENY FLIGHT and
PROVIDE PROMISE and surveillance operations of Bosnia Herzegovina and the Former
Republics of Yugoslavia.
LCDR Henkle's next assignment was to Mobile Environmental Team (MET) Rota, Spain from
1995 to 1997. He served as MET Division Officer and acting Department Head. During this tour,
he deployed with DESRON TWELVE, providing oceanographic and meteorological support
during numerous ASW exercises. He coordinated with Naval Special Warfare Unit TWO/TEN,
Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR), and various NATO, allied and foreign Special
Forces integrating METOC support within the MED/Africa AOR. LCDR Henkle deployed to
Tazar Hungary conducting the first test of PREDATOR UAV OPS in Bosnia and deployed to
operation JOINT ENDEAVOR.
LCDR Henkle's next assignment was as the OA Division Officer aboard USS INCHON (MCS12) from 1997 to 1999. During his tour, he completed the transition of Bottom Mapping and
Provincing from a Naval Oceanographic Office exercise to a real time, fleet-produced decision
making process to MCMRON Commanders. LCDR Henkle's forecasts provided safe and timely
hurricane evacuation of all 67,000 military and civilian personnel from Corpus Christi, Texas
during Hurricane Brett. LCDR Henkle deployed into Albania as METOC coordinator and Navy
Liaison during Operation SHINING HOPE. During his tour, he qualified as a Surface Warfare
Officer and a Mine Warfare Specialist. LCDR Henkle arrived at NAVLANTMETOCFAC New
London in Nov 1999, providing oceanographic support to submarines deploying from Groton,
Connecticut. LCDR Henkle retired June 4 2004 after 24 years of naval service.
LCDR Henkle’s personal decorations include; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal
(Three Awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious
Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Coast Guard
Meritorious Unit Commendation with Operational Device and Gold Star, Battle E Ribbon (3
awards), Good Conduct Medal (Two awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense
Service Medal (Two Awards), Armed Force Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal
(Three Bronze Stars), Kosovo Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian
Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (Seven Awards), Reserve Sea Service
Deployment Ribbon, Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Coast Guard Special
Operations Service Ribbon, NATO Medal (Two Awards: Former Yugoslavia and Kosovo),
Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Rifle
Marksmanship Medal (Expert Award), Pistol Marksmanship Medal (Expert Award).



LCDR Terance Henkle USN-Ret received his Masters in Art in Teaching (MAT)
from Sacred Heart University in December 2003.
From 2005 though 2008 LCDR Henkle taught at Putnam High School teaching
Earth Science and started an Oceanography/Marine Biology class at Putnam
Highs School with limited educational funds.
Currently he is teaching 8th grade science at Fitch Middle School in Groton CT.

LCDR Henkle has been studying the American Revolutionary War since he found a book
in London England in 1993 written from the British soldiers point of view during this
period. Currently he has about 176 books in his own personal library.
