Further Information
July 1982 After qualification I took an Associate position at “Malcolm Bell & Associates” in
Sunderland where I worked Full-time for almost three years.
Towards the end of my time there I began negotiations to enter partnership with two colleagues, Ian
Gray (B.D.S. Newc 1982 ) and his brother , Steven Gray (B.D.S. Newc 1983 ). Around this time I
worked as an Associate for “Smith & Taylor” in Hetton-le-Hole, Co. Durham, for some 10 weeks or so,
but only on Fridays.
July 1985 Following the formation of the partnership Gray Harris & Gray Associates we bought the
practice of “Paul Plahe Asociates” in Billingham, Cleveland.
August 1988 The partnership bought a further practice, that of “David Naisby Associates” in
Sunderland. I became the Partner responsible for this practice, and worked 4 days at Sunderland
where we gradually expanded to take on two Associates. Meanwhile the Billingham practice, which
was being run by my partners, had expanded to support three Partners and three Associates. I
worked at Billingham on Fridays only at this time.
January 1994 We sold the Billingham practice to Paul Averley (B.D.S.Newc 1991), and he has built
further upon the success of the practice since then. We decided to sell the Billingham practice due
to the increasing burden of travelling to work (with a daily 90 mile round trip causing great stress),
and to concentrate our efforts upon the Sunderland practice, which was much closer to our homes in
Newcastle.
February 1995 brought further changes with a dissolving of the “Gray Harris & Gray” Partnership. Ian
and Steven Gray had decided to pursue other interests, and to work only part-time as Dental
Practitioners. I continued to work full-time, but now as a ''single handed'' practitioner at the same
practice, and sharing expenses with Messers. Gray & Gray on a pro-rata basis.
June 2000 I left Chester Road to establish “Riveredge Dental Studio”. This is a new practice in brand
new purpose-built premises. The new practice served mainly Private patients, and had an emphasis
upon Advanced Restorative Dentistry, Implantology and Cosmetic Dentistry.
August 2000 The new practice was appointed VT training status within the Northern Deanery. This
was continued for successive years till finally we resigned from our minimal NHS work.
April 2008 A second practice was opened with the aim of bringing the Riveredge brand within easier
reach for both referring dentists and patients themselves in and around the north Tyneside area. It is
located on Osborne Road Jesmond in Newcastle upon Tyne, and is already exceeding our
expectations.
Present Time Currently the team consists of myself, 4 nursing and admin staff, and a Hygienist. We
have also recruited another dental colleague to the team, Dr, Lyndsey Adams, and the addition of Mr
Rob Banks, a Consultant maxillo facial surgeon at Sunderland Royal Hospital to the team, now
allows us to place all our implants right here at Riveredge. The new practice has taken much
planning and lots of my time over recent months, but the results have been well worth the immense
effort. We look forward to further development of the project in the coming years.
