Demissie Alemayehu Named Fellow of the American Statistical
Association
Alexandria, VA - Demissie Alemayehu, Senior Director and Team Leader at Pfizer
Pharmaceuticals Group, will be named Fellow of the American Statistical Association on August
13, 2002, during the annual awards ceremony at the Joint Statistical Meetings in New York City.
Alemaychu earned Master's and Doctorate degrees at the University of California - Berkeley in
1982 and 1986, respectively. He joined the American Statistical Association in 1985. The official
Fellow citation reads as follows: "Demissie Alemayehu, Senior Director, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals
Group: For excellence in statistical applications in clinical research, for outstanding leadership in
statistical education, for statistical leadership in the phan-naccutical industry, for research in
bootstrap methods, and for editorial service."
The designation of Fellow is a superlative honor in the Association and has signified an
individual's outstanding service to and leadership in the field of statistical science for 87
years. Each year, the Committee on Fellows can elect only one-third of one percent of
the total membership. This year, 48 members of the Association were accorded the
Fellows honor.
"The Association can be extremely proud of the vast range of contributions the new
Fellows have made to the national and international society at large," said Rich Allen, the
Chair of the ASA Committee on Fellows. The other Committee members were Judith D.
Goldberg, Nancy J. Kirkendall, Gary C. McDonald, William Q. Meeker, Ingram Olkin,
Kathryn M. Roeder, Javier Rojo, and Jane-Ling Wang.
