SYLLABUS The start of a New Era
KEY ARTS AND CRAFTS 6
PRIMARY
THE START OF A NEW ERA
METHODOLOGY
The acquisition of cultural and artistic competence in primary education involves
introducing students to different aspects of culture and art in order to increase
appreciation, provide a source of personal enrichment and build an awareness of
universal culture.
Content which comes under Block 1, Observing Art, will focus on the following areas:
▪ Drawing animals and landscapes to analyse different points of observation, taking
into account the relationship between perception of size and location in space.
▪ Observing different habitats, focusing on patterns in animal bodies and the
chromatic richness of nature.
▪ Exploring the expressive possibilities of materials for artistic composition.
Content under Block 2, Expression and Artistic Creation, will utilise the following
methods:
▪ Developing the expressive possibilities of sketching and colour blends by drawing
and representing flat shapes, using size differences to express space, framing and
contrasts.
▪ Developing basic skills by performing tasks which require a mastery of different
tools and materials.
▪ Appreciating the effects produced by obtaining and blending colours in various
ways to achieve different end results. A colour study will explore shades and
chromatic differences created by the interaction between tactile and visual textures
and light.
▪ Addressing the concepts of spatial organisation, distance and size with regard to
depth.
The unit ends with a craft activity called Hands On! This activity stresses the
importance of neat and orderly working habits and the gratification of using these skills
as an element of play.
▪ Various linguistic activities will build fluency and accuracy. Second language
acquisition will be augmented by interesting topics and many different oral
activities, with new material to enhance linguistic competence and ample
opportunities for revision and practice.
1. TIMING
This unit will be undertaken during the first term of the year, and it is estimated to take
eleven fifty minutes sessions.
