NZQA registered unit standard 18569 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of depilation chemistry and depilatory paint preparation used in leather manufacture Level 4 Purpose Credits 5 This theory-based unit standard is for experienced people in the fellmongery or leather processing industries. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: the mechanism of sulphide depilation; the preparation of a sulphide depilatory paint; and the reasons why depilatory paint formulations are varied, in leather manufacture. Classification Fellmongery and Leather Processing > Fellmongery Processing Knowledge Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanism of sulphide depilation used in leather manufacture. Evidence requirements 1.1 The constituents of a sulphide based depilatory paint are explained in terms of their function. 1.2 The chemical reaction involved in wool loosening is described in terms of using a sulphide depilatory. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of the preparation of a sulphide depilatory paint used in leather manufacture. Primary Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 18569 version 6 Page 2 of 3 Evidence requirements 2.1 The process used to make a sulphide depilatory paint is described in terms of equipment and procedure. procedure includes but is not limited to – sulphide solution preparation, paint formulation. Range 2.2 The procedure used to control the make-up of a depilatory paint is described in terms of measurements and measuring equipment. Outcome 3 Demonstrate knowledge of the reasons why depilatory paint formulations are varied in leather manufacture. Evidence requirements 3.1 Different paint formulations are described in terms of reasons for variance. 3.2 An overnight paint and a Quikpul paint are compared in terms of formulation, advantages and risks.
