This entry-level unit standard for people who are employed in
the fellmongery or leather industries and whose job is to mix,
apply and distribute depilatory paint to green skins.
People credited with this unit standard are able to mix
depilatory paint for application to green skins, and apply and
distribute depilatory paint to green skins, in a fellmongery
processing operation.

Company specifications – product specifications set by the company relating to
materials, processes and practices.
Organisational requirements – instructions to staff on policies and procedures which
are documented in memo, electronic or manual format and are available in the
workplace.

1.1
Chemical types and proportions are mixed in accordance with company
specifications.

1.3
Paint tests are conducted and adjustments made in accordance with
organisational requirements.
1.4
Paint samples are taken and submitted for laboratory analysis in accordance
with organisational requirements.
1.5
Prepared paint solutions are stored for use in holding tanks in accordance with
organisational requirements.
1.6
Records of chemicals, depilatory paint, and concentration formulations used are
maintained in accordance with organisational requirements.
Outcome 2
Apply and distribute depilatory paint to green skins in a fellmongery processing operation.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Preparations for start-up are completed in accordance with organisational
requirements.
Range
preparations may include but are not limited to – paint tank
selection, valve operation, fume extraction system, automated
paint system.
2.2
Spray booth is set up to obtain spread and quantity of paint in accordance with
company specifications for types of skins to be treated.
2.3
Application and distribution rates meet company specifications for skin types.
2.4
Formulations and concentrations of paints meet company specifications for the
types of skins treated.
2.5
Application and distribution tests are conducted and corrective actions taken to
remedy any deficiencies in accordance with organisational requirements.
2.6
Any malfunctions during operations are identified, rectified, and recorded in
accordance with organisational and safety requirements.
2.7
Records of depilatory paint use and application are maintained in accordance
with organisational requirements.
2.8
Storage tank valves are closed and spray booth lines opened and flushed when
any blockages occur and on completion of daily operations in accordance with
organisational requirements.
2.9
Chemicals are stored, handled and used in accordance with organisational and
statutory requirements.
2.10
Effluent is disposed of in accordance with organisational requirements.
