Title: Museum Assistant
Compensation: Unpaid
Hours: average of 6 hrs per week, including 3 hours on 1-2 Saturdays per month (during school year)
The New London Public Museum owns a diverse collection of objects and images representing the
people and environment of the New London, Wisconsin area. More than 8,000 objects are held in public
trust by the museum including fine, folk and decorative arts, textiles, toys, natural history specimens,
Native American objects, local history artifacts, as well as paper items and photographs. The New
London Public Museum is one of only five public museums in the state of Wisconsin.
Purpose: The purpose of this internship is to give the successful candidate a look at the museum field as
a career. The intern will assist with a variety of projects related to various departments in a museum
including collections, education, research, etc. as well as customer service in a museum setting. The
intern will gain real world experience that they can use in their career. The Museum Director is the
intern coordinator and supervisor. Candidates from current undergraduate and graduate programs may
apply.
Museum assistant tasks and responsibilities include:
 Taking care of the museum alone, 1 or 2 Saturdays per month for 3 hours
 Assisting with artifacts and archives through data enter, photography, inventory, etc.
 Assisting with education department tasks as needed
 Customer service including: greet and orient guests upon arrival at NLPM
Qualifications:
Interest in history or museum field
Excellent organizational skills
Good interpersonal and customer service skills
Willingness to learn new computer programs
Attention to detail
Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
Initiative to work alone or on a team
Ability to direct people in a positive way
Quickly assess situations and problem solving skills
Expectations of Intern:
 Arrive to work at agreed upon time and do not leave before end of day, unless there is an
emergency or you’ve received permission from the Director.
 Work one or two Saturdays per month during the school year (museum is closed on Saturdays
Memorial Day through Labor Day)
 Complete the hours of work needed for academic requirements
 Be responsible for any forms, reports, etc. required by college/university
 Professionalism and good customer service while at work
 Provide a written report at the end of your internship about your experience

 Flexibility to work around your schedule as long as you fulfill your requirements for the
internship



Verification of work provided to Professor and University in a timely fashion
Physical Capacities:
 Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping
 Lifting 25 lbs.; pushing, pulling 150 lbs.
 Intricate eye/hand coordination
 Precise manipulation of small or miniature objects
 Vision: near and far
 Speaking, hearing
Working Conditions:
 Work involves infrequent exposure to some unusual elements, such as dirt, dust, fumes,
chemical residues, and unpleasant or unusual odors.
 Work performed in a museum environment.
 Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require
following basic safety precautions.
