DOCUMENT TITLE: Research Report for Nellie Young

CONTRACTED DATE OF RESEARCH: 01 October 2008

CLIENT: John Everett; Pretoria, South Africa

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE:

The objective for this research as requested by the client were to find the births of Nellie

Young and her sister Annie Young, the births and marriage of their parents, and death of their parents. The client also would like to find out when the family went to Australia as missionaries.

RESEARCH TIME OR BUDGET ALLOTTED:

The budget allotted for this research was £80.00 as stated by the researcher’s initial estimate. This is for research time and does not include additional fees that cannot be foreseen.

RESEARCH SOURCES:

Old Parish Registers of Scotland (Birth/Christenings and Marriage Banns) 1538-1854

Statutory Registers of Scotland (Births, Marriages, and Deaths) 1855-present

Scottish Census Returns 1901-1881

Incoming Passenger Lists for Great Britain

Websites: Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Ancestry.co.uk

THE RESEARCH RESULTS:

The results of the search are as follows:

2

The starting point of the search was to find the birth of Nellie Young and her sister Annie Young. The client stated in his initial email in October 2008 that Nellie was born about 1880, and that the family was from the Arbroath region of Scotland. With this in mind, the birth index was searched for the period of 1870-1890 in the County of Forfar

(shire) or County Angus (shire).

1

In the history of Scottish counties and administration districts, Angus and Forfar was the same region. By this we mean that historically Forfar (shire) was the official name of the Angus region until 1928, in which time it became known as the County of

Angus until 1975.

2

In 1975, Angus became part of the district called Tayside, and then in

1996 the area became what is now the Angus Council.

3

This search did not produce any results for Nellie Young in the stated years or the

County searched. To make sure we didn’t miss anything, the surrounding counties were searched as well – Perthshire, Aberdeenshire, and Kincardineshire for the same year range.

4 However, nothing was found.

With no positive results from searching the Statutory Birth Index, the research focused on the marriage of Nellie Young and Charles Everett to see if Nellie was in

Scotland at this time. The Statutory Marriage Index was searched for the year range of

1900-1930 in the County of Forfar or Angus.

5

Their marriage was located, and transcribed

With the information given in Nellie’s and Charles’ marriage certificate, we have learned the names of Nellie’s parents – George Young and Helen Scott. It is noticed that both parents are listed as deceased. This would help in determining the possible year range for the death of Nellie’s parents.

The marriage of her sister Annie Young was not searched at this time, but could be done in a future research project. However, in Nellie’s marriage certificate, we notice that one of the witnesses is her sister Annie Young. This would mean that in a future search for Annie’s marriage (if she was married) would be after 1908 in possibly

Arbroath, but this cannot be taken as a certainty even though Annie is residing there. All areas should be searched just in case.

Now that Nellie’s marriage has been located, and we now know that she was in

Scotland by 1908, we can search the 1901 Scottish census to see if Nellie and possibly her sister Annie are listed. This will help to determine where the two girls were born.

The Scottish census returns from 1851 to the current published year of 1901 will normally give the parish and county of a person’s birthplace as part of the information it provides.

In searching the 1901 census both Nellie and her sister Annie were located in

Arbroath, Forfar or Angus.

The stated place of birth for both Nellie and her younger sister Annie was

Queensland. It appears that Nellie and Annie’s parents went to Australia about 1885 or before, which was roughly the birth year of Nellie. Furthermore, Elizabeth Scott appears to be the sister of Nellie and Annie’s mother Helen Scott as they are stated as being the nieces of Elizabeth Scott in the 1901 census.

4

5

In determining the birth of Nellie and her sister Annie Young, it looks like the estimated birth year for Nellie would place her at c. 1885 and Annie’s birth at c.1887.

Nellie’s age in her marriage certificate and the 1901 census both have a year of 1885 as a possible birth year. From the stated birthplace of Queensland, it is most likely that they are referring to this area of Australia (the census does not say the country). This would confirm the client’s statement of the family being in Australia. With Nellie and her sister

Annie being shown in the 1901 census as being born in Queensland, this would be the reason why their births were not found in Scotland during the initial search.

The 1891 census for Scotland was also searched, but Nellie and her sister Annie were not found.

9

It is possible that they were still living in Australia at this time. This could narrow down the date of the death of their parents (c. 1887 after the birth of Annie to 1901 when the girls are residing in Arbroath, Scotland with their Aunt).

The passenger lists for Australia were not searched at this time. This would probably need to be searched by a local researcher in Australia. The Australian passenger list information is not readily available to this researcher at the present time of this project.

However, we know when Nellie and her sister Annie returned back to Scotland or rather Great Britain, presumably after their parents died. The incoming passenger list for the UK was searched at the website Ancestry.com, and the girls were located.

Department and successors: Inwards Passenger Lists; Kew, Surrey, England: The National Archives of the

UK (TNA). Series BT26, Piece 32, Item 15.

6

The passenger list for Nellie and Annie is dated 1892 when they arrived back to

Britain, this would confirm the reason why they are not found in the 1891 census returns.

This could be the possible year (1892) of the death of their parents, or perhaps the year before. It is assumed that the girls would not have gone back to Britain without their parents. The passenger list only shows Nellie and Annie and not their parents, which means it is presumed very likely that their parents were deceased by this time.

The passenger list states that they arrived in London, England in 1892. It is not known whether they stayed there for any length of time afterwards. It is likely that the girls were just landing there, and then travelled back to the Arbroath area to live with relatives, such as their Aunt Elizabeth Scott (as shown in the 1901 census).

The research at this point now focuses attention on Nellie’s and Annie’s parents,

George Young and Helen Scott.

With the names of Nellie’s parents now known from the information given on

Nellie’s and Charles’ marriage certificate in 1908, their marriage was searched and located in Arbroath.

With the year and location of the marriage of George Young and Helen Scott now known, we can narrow down the year range of when George and Helen travelled to

Australia as missionaries. We can say most likely that the couple travelled between late

1883 (November or December) to around 1885, the date roughly that their daughter

Nellie was born in Queensland.

In the Scott family 1881 census entry we find Elizabeth Scott, aged 13, in the household. This would be the aunt found in the 1901census in Arbroath where we find

Nellie and her younger sister Annie residing.

The births of George Young and Helen Scott were searched and found. This information was determined by their stated ages in the 1881 census return. The first entry found was the birth of George Young.

16

Next, Helen’s birth was located.

The marriage of George Young’s parents were searched and found. In trying to pinpoint the marriage date for this couple, the ages of the children found in the 1881 census were used to help narrow down a possible date and place. George Young, Sr. and

Mary Ann Carson were married 01 August 1846 in Dundee, Forfar.

Also, the marriage of Helen Scott’s parents were searched and found. The process used for narrowing down the marriage date and location for George Young and

Mary Ann Carson was also used for finding the marriage of William Scott and Elizabeth

Lawrie. William Scott and Elizabeth Lawrie were married on 05 July 1853 in St.

Vigeans, Forfar.

Marriage Extract of William Scott and Betsy Lowrie:

Scott and Betsy Lowrie; digital image, Scotlandspeople

It should be noted that the surname for Betsy Lowrie is also spelled as Lawrie in the records. Her grand-daughter Annie Lawrie Young’s middle name is spelled mostly as

Lawrie in the records listed in previous discussions in this report.

The deaths of George Young and his wife Helen Scott were not located in

Scotland. It is very likely that their deaths would be found in the Australian death registers. Unfortunately, the researcher does not have access to these records. It is likely that George and Helen died c.1892 (the year that Nellie and Annie arrive back to Great

Britain from Australia), but possibly the year before in 1891 (at least 5 years before could be searched just to make sure something is not missed).

FOR CONTINUED RESEARCH:

This completes the requested research for Nellie Scott Young with the budget assigned by the client. Mostly all the objectives have been located for the client for this period of research. However, the current search just scratched the surface of what is out there. The chances of finding more information on the family are very good.

19 Scotland, “Search Old Parish Registers (OPR) Marriage Banns (1553-1854),” database, Scotlandpeople

(http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk: accessed 14 October 2008), entry for William Scott and Betsy Lowrie marriage, 05 July 1853, St. Vigeans [Arbroath] Parish; citing reference 319/0050/0392.

12

If more research is undertaken, it is very likely that the deaths of George Young’s parents and Helen Scott’s parents could be found, and possibly some wills or other estate records if searched. The Old Parish Registers for Birth/Christenings and Marriage Banns can be researched for other ancestors found. The earlier census returns of 1841 to 1871 can be searched as well.

With George Young being a teacher (also Nellie and her sister Annie), the school records for the Arbroath Parish area can be searched for any further information at the

National Archives of Scotland (NAS). There is also the kirk session books and dissenting church records (the Youngs appear to be from the Scottish Episcopal Church according to the marriage certificates found for Nellie and her parents) that can be located and searched for the Youngs and any other ancestors. There are also various tax records, valuation rolls, deeds/sasines, etc. that can be searched for George and his family, and for any other ancestors found in a continued research project.

The search for the deaths of Nellie’s and Annie’s parents in Australia (c. 1892?) can be located for future research with the help of an Australian researcher on location.

There might be some newspaper clippings in Australia regarding the death of their parents, especially if they were murdered. Also, the passenger list for the year range of

1883-1885 can be searched for the arrival of George and Helen to Australia. As mentioned previously in this report, the records are not easily accessible from Scotland.

However, it can be done with outside help.
