Saint Ann Parish Catholic Middle School/High School Scholarships Saint Ann Scholarships Saint Ann parish has a proud 100 year tradition of Catholic Education. We are blessed to have many scholarships and awards that acknowledge faithful participation and excellence. We are proud of our parish families who continue to support our many diverse Catholic Education programs in this local community and throughout the greater Boston area. We are honored to support our young people as part of this parishes dedicated tradition of raising and teaching our people the faith of Jesus Christ and his Church. I am personally grateful for the individual support of our parishioners and memorials offered and given in memory of our departed brothers and sisters, many who are alumni of our Catholic Schools. Marie J. (Finn) Conley Catholic High School Scholarship The Marie (Finn) Conley scholarship was established by her family and friends after she tragically lost her life while in the performance of her duties as a Crossing Guard for the Boston Police Department. Marie heroically sacrificed herself to save a 10year-old in October of 2008 while the child was crossing the street. Marie’s sacrifice is a unique witness. Those who knew her well, remind us that her life ended with the same self-less love, character, courage and honor that she instilled in her children. As a mother and public servant, Marie was a visible member of the Saint Ann Parish Neponset and Dorchester community. Marie was well visible in her many years crossing our children at Pope’s Hill and at the Mather School. She was well known to treat each child as if they were her own daughter or son. These families became part of the fabric of her family and professional life. Marie and many of her siblings are graduates of Saint Ann Parish School. Marie’s family and children, followed in their relatives footsteps receiving the Sacraments and growing in their faith at Saint Ann Parish. Her children were educated in parochial and public school settings and embody the good example and works of their mother and family. Marie strongly believed in the importance of her faith and the education of each child. This Scholarship is offered and available for children from Saint Ann Parish, who are active, in the service of their parish and in their community. This generous scholarship honors and encourages our children to commit themselves generously to the service of God and neighbor. The Joey Holloran and Gerard Duchaney Memorial Scholarships The Joey Holloran and Gerard Duchaney Memorial Scholarships are given in honor of two remarkable young men who were tragically taken from us at a young age. Joey and Gerry’s families and friends hold an annual golf tournament in their memory to honor and remember them and to celebrate their friendship. Their generosity funds this memorial scholarship each year. The recipients are required to be faithful, hard working, and to have the respect of their family, peers and community. These scholarships are designated to support students attending Catholic Schools. Saint Ann Parish Catholic Middle School/High School Scholarships The Richard T. Dever Memorial Scholarship Ricky Dever was a Sergeant on the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. In March of 2005, Ricky was coming to the aid of a friend and working to keep the peace when his life was tragically taken. It was not out of character for Ricky to help a friend. What Ricky did best was to make and keep friends. Friendship for him came natural and was strong and unconditional. He had an exciting presence, a smile, a wave, a hug, a big heart, and a contagious zest for life. To know Ricky was to love him. Ricky was taken from us far too early, but his memory will last forever. Ricky’s family and friends donate this memorial scholarship each year to a student who demonstrates the virtues that Ricky exhibited so well: a Spirit of Peace, Kindness, and Friendship. The recipient is also required to attend a Catholic High School. ___________________________________________________________________________________ The PJ Flavin Memorial Scholarship PJ will always be remembered for his love and pride of Saint Ann Parish, his community, Dorchester CYO sports and the game of baseball. His family and friends would like to donate this scholarship to well rounded young adults who are kind, good friends, determined, and will be attending a Catholic High School. Each year his family and friends gather to remember P.J. and to support the youth of our parish. Massachusetts State Trooper Mark S. Charbonnier Memorial Scholarship On September 2, 1994 Massachusetts State Trooper Mark S. Charbonnier was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty, on Route 3 - Kingston, Massachusetts. Mark was a well respected and decorated servant and a special man beyond compare. For the 13 years his family, friends and colleagues paid tribute to him with a Road Race and Golf Tournament, “Charbo’s Run.” This event has raised over $500,000 in its 10 year run and is still considered one of the largest Law Enforcement Road Races. Many of the Dorchester parishes received support for Catholic Education through this annual event. While nothing can fill the hole that is left by the passing of Mark, the outpouring of support from all participants in these events helps us all to cope with our loss. It also allows us to continue the legacy of helping others in our community. The Trooper Mark Charbonnier Scholarship Fund has established many perpetual educational scholarships at all levels, from elementary to undergraduate, and has donated generously to many worthwhile causes. Mark loved his Country and this Commonwealth of Massachusetts and that’s why he dedicated his life to its protection. He paid the ultimate sacrifice and he remains a true hero and example to us all. The family and friends of Trooper Mark Charbonnier hope that those who have benefitted will follow his example: a spirit of love and caring, to always do what is right and good, to protect others, and to fight injustice, to stand up strongly against evil and injustice. The recipient needs to exemplify these characteristics and be the son or daughters of our honorable and brave police officers, fire fighters, and emergency personnel. Saint Ann Parish Catholic Middle School/High School Scholarships The Connor Family Scholarship Along with being Fr. Connor’s current home, Saint Ann Parish hold’s a special place in the hearts of the Connor Family. Many of Fr. Sean’s aunts, uncles and cousins received their Sacraments here and attended Saint Ann parish school. In honor of the good Sisters of St. Joseph and the other faculty and staff of St Ann school and Pope John Paul II Catholic Academy, Fr. Sean has established a scholarship to be presented to a student(s) who is an active member of Saint Ann Parish and attending Catholic schools. In honor of his late father, the scholarships preference acknowledges a student who is an active member of Saint Ann Parish and serves or sings at Mass. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Stephen Kenny Scholarship Stephen is lovingly remembered with great fondness. His first grade teacher strongly reminds us that Stephen was kind, lovingly, caring, a good friend, brother, son and grandson. Stephen is remembered because of the loving aura of strength and beauty that God gave him. He suffered much as a child for one so young. Gracefully, Stephen, shared with his parish and school family, by drawing us into his illness and treatment and helping us as his parish family to understand deeply his own suffering and his death in 2001. With his mother, grandparents and brother faithfully at his side, Stephen taught what Saint Paul writes in the First letter to the Corinthians, “Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. Love never fails.” This scholarship is offered to a deserving student who bears unique witness to the faith and teaches us, like Stephen, what Paul writes of divine love. McDonald was a devoted fifty-year member of St. Ann’s Parish and School. She drew enormous strength and inspiration from her parish and Neponset faith community. Her many friendships and generous involvements in the neighborhood are inspirational. Alice reminds us of the gift of parish life. We are grateful to Alice’s son, Paul White, who continues to support Catholic Education and Saint Ann parish in honor of his mother.
