REHOMING CENTRE Job Title: Veterinary Nurse Assistant Reporting to: Rehoming Centre Management Team Location: Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre Essex Revised: December 2014 Summary Primarily to work under the direction of the Veterinary Nurse to assist in the veterinary care of dogs at the centre. The post holder will also supervise and support the work of Canine Carers and occasionally may be required to take an active part in Canine Carer duties. Duties Surgical suite The suite is for minor surgical procedures, including neutering, at the discretion of the centre veterinary surgeon on dogs at the centre and for dogs owned by the general public. To maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in all areas. To adhere to Health and Safety regulations. To prepare theatre for surgical procedures and to assist in all aspects of surgery. To care for all animals admitted to the veterinary suite and in isolation for treatment, including the cleaning of kennels and food preparation and monitoring of the recovery kennels. Page 1 of 3 Vet’s room The vet’s room is for the examination and non-surgical treatment of dogs at the centre and adopted by the general public. In the absence of the veterinary nurse, to support and assist the veterinary surgeon during vet visits. To ensure clinical records are updated and drugs dispensed according to current legislation during vet visits. To deal with members of the general public in a professional manner. General Willing to undertake additional training. To carry out any other reasonable duties as directed by the Management Team and those in supervisory positions. To undertake driving duties as required Carry out Canine Carer duties when required. The normal working hours in this role are 40 per week, working at least two weekends a month. Expected working pattern is to be 5 shifts per week, which will include some late shifts (11am – 8pm) and occasional night shifts (5pm – 8am) which will entail staff to stay on-site in staff accommodation when required. An understanding of the importance of customer care Qualifications: A Veterinary Nurse Qualification would be desirable A qualification in animal care/welfare would be desirable Experience: Experience of working in a Veterinary Practice is essential Experience of working with a variety of dogs (breeds, ages and temperaments) Experience of providing excellent customer service Experience of working in a rehoming/welfare environment would be desirable Other requirements: Commitment to the aims and objectives of Dogs Trust A full clean driving licence Good level of fitness as this is a very physical role.
