Tennessee High School Hockey Championship
Tournament Format & Rules
I. Participant Eligibility
Coach Certification Any coach on the bench must show proof of his/her USA HOCKEY CEP L3 prior
to the first tournament game of each series at tournament table. Failure to do so may result in forfeit of
game.
Player Eligibility
(updated 01/2008) All players participating in the 2008 Preds Cup must be on official
USA Hockey team roster by January 15th, 2008. Team managers must provide a copy of official USA
Hockey roster and all supplemental rosters (meaning roster changes/additions up until Jan. 15 th) along
with two (2) scoresheets prior to Jan. 15th showing they have played. If a player on the roster by Jan.
15th has not played a game, two (2) score sheets must be produced to demonstrate that the player has
played 2 games since Jan. 15th. In addition, a copy of each individual players USA Hockey registration
is required. Paperwork must be submitted by February 25th to:

If there is an eligibility issue due to injury, a letter shall be produced by the home league verifying the
eligibility of the injured player or the replacement for that player.
Note: All suspensions will be honored during this tournament. Prior to first game of each tournament
series team managers shall provide a listing of any suspensions currently in force (including any Match
penalties), the date of infraction and number of games to be served under the subject suspension.
Failure to do so will result in forfeit.
All players and coaches will be required to sign-in prior to their first game of the Preliminary
and Championship series at Tournament Table.
II. Tournament Format
Seeding
The following seeding format will determine the eight (8) teams to compete in the
Predators Cup Preliminary series (Southern Ice, Franklin):
Knoxville: (updated 12/2008) The regular season qualifies automatically for the Predators’ Cup playoffs. The second team is the highest placing team in the Knoxville Cup Tournament other than
the regular season champions. The number one seed is determined to be the highest placing
team of the two in the Knoxville Cup Tournament.
Memphis: First seed is winner of Memphis Cup. Second seed is first place team of regular
season. If they are the same team, then the second place team of Memphis Cup will be the
second seed.
Nashville: First seed is first place team of regular season. Second seed is winner of Nashville
Cup. Third seed is second place team of Nashville Cup. Fourth seed is third place team of
Nashville Cup. If the regular season first place team is same as the winner of Nashville Cup,
then second place team of Nashville Cup becomes second seed, third place team of Nashville
Cup becomes third seed and fourth place team of Nashville Cup becomes fourth seed.

The eight (8) teams qualifying to the Preliminary series (Southern Ice, Franklin) will be
seeded in the following match-ups:

Format
A Blue Division and a Gold Division round robin Preliminary series (Southern Ice Arena,
Franklin) of eight (8) teams will take place to determine the four (4) teams seeding into the Predators
Cup Championship series. Top two (2) teams from Blue and Gold Divisions will advance to the
Championship series (Centennial Sportsplex, Nashville) determined by the following order:
Total number of points (win = 2 points, ties = 1 point, loss = 0 points)

All teams will play a minimum of 3 games, with a possibility of up to 5 games if team advances to
the Championship series. Championship series will consist of two semi-final games, a consolation
game and a final game
III. Tournament Rules
1) Game Time
Both teams must be ready to play at least ten (10) minutes prior to the
designated start time. Referee will signal starting of the game time clock. Team handshake at the
end of every game.
2) Game Periods All games shall consist of three (3), fourteen (14) minute stop-time periods. Ice
time allotted for each game is eighty (80) minutes – no ice resurfacing between periods.
Championship game will consist of three, 14-minute stop-time periods. Ice time allotted for
Championship game shall consist of two (2) hours – ice resurfacing between 2nd and 3rd period. A
one (1) minute break shall be allowed.
3) Pre-Game Warm Up
Each game shall be preceded by a three (3) minute warm-up period with
exception of Championship game warm-up period increased to five (5) minutes. Failure by either
team to promptly take the ice for a warm-up may result in loss of warm-up session, delay of game
penalty, or shortening of game time in the third period. Warm up time will begin immediately after
the Zamboni has left the ice and the Zamboni doors have been shut.
4) Curfew
All games must be completed within an eighty (80) minute allotted curfew
(Championship game will have an allotted two (2) hours curfew). Championship series games will
allow for overtime and shootout, if necessary. All games shall consist of three (3), fourteen (14)
minute stop-time periods. Both benches and coaches will be notified prior to start of each game
by time keeper as to the official time to be recorded as beginning of game and official time of end of
game curfew (beginning time plus eighty (80) minutes).

At the beginning of 3rd period, timekeeper and officials will verify that a minimum 20 minutes of time
remains within the 80 minute game curfew. If a minimum of 20 minutes remains, the third period
will utilize stop-time. If the time remaining within the curfew is less than 20 minutes, the third period
will be running time. During run-time, the clock will stop for goals, penalties, in the event of an
injury and will re-start at the drop of the puck. In the final two minutes of the game, if the score has
a differential of 2 goals or less, the clock will be stop-time. Once run clock has been initiated, there
will be NO time-outs allowed for remainder of game, even if stop clock resumes due to two (2) goals
or less differential.
5) 7-Goal Differential
If the goal differential at any point of a game becomes seven (7); the
timekeeper shall be instructed to use running time for the remainder of the game. If at any point
during the remainder of the game, the differential becomes less than seven (7); the timekeeper will
revert back to stop-time.
6) Time Outs
One (1) 30-second time out per team permitted per game, unless run time.
7) Tag-up Offsides
In order to reduce the number of whistles and to add more continuous
play, a player who precedes the puck into the offensive zone will not be immediately called offside.
Rather, the attacking player will be given the opportunity to return to the blue line and make skate
contact with it. After “tagging up” at the blue line, the attacker will be allowed to re-enter the
offensive zone and pursue the puck without penalty.
8) USA Hockey Rules Apply
USA Hockey rules will govern all tournament play utilizing a 3-man
referee system. Neck guards are required by all players.
9) Off-Ice Officials
Home team shall provide one (1) person per game for scorekeeper, one
(1) person for timekeeper and one (1) person for home penalty box. Visiting team shall provide one
(1) person per game for visiting penalty box.
10) Tie Breakers
In the event of a tie at the end of regulation play in the Championship series, the
following will be used to determine a winner:
Overtime - One (1) five minute stop-clock “sudden death” 5-on-5 overtime.
Shootout - If the game is not decided in a 5-minute overtime period, a shoot-out with 5 players
from each team will be conducted. Winner is the team with the highest score out of 5 shooters.
Visiting team shoots first, players alternate shots. If the game is still not decided, a one on one
shootout will occur until the game is decided. Teams will alternate shooters. Players from the
five on five shootout are ineligible until all players have taken shots in the one on one shoot out,
then the five on five shootout players may shoot in this one on one shoot out. If in any round of
one on one shootout, either team scores and the other team does not score, the team that
scored is declared the winner.
11) Fisticuffs (Fighting)
Zero tolerance for fighting/fisticuffs. Zero tolerance for leaving the bench
or penalty box to engage in an on-ice altercation. Zero tolerance for 3rd man in. A player who
receives a major penalty for fighting or participates in any of the above will receive a game
misconduct and be removed for the remainder of the game and one additional game. A discipline
committee will be set in place to review all game misconduct and match penalties and may add
additional games if warranted under supplemental discipline.
12) Obscene, Profane or Abusive Language
Using obscene, profane or abusive language to any
person on the ice or anywhere in the rink before, during, or after the game shall be assessed a
game misconduct penalty (removed for the remainder of the game and one additional game).
