The Wabash Volunteer Electronic Updates on The Campaign for Leadership Volume 4: Issue 8 Friday, August 22, 2003 FRATERNITY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM UPDATE Prepared by Cal Black ’66, Director of Major Gifts and Fraternity Partnership Coordinator For 150 years—nearly all its life—Wabash College has benefited from having fraternities on the campus. Since the early days of literary societies meeting off campus, fraternities have given their members a living, breathing education they can’t receive anywhere else-a complement to their classroom training that forms lifelong friendships, creates personal and academic discipline, and forms the social backbone of the College. --Wabash College Fraternity Partnerships Handbook Beta Theta Pi The Beta renovation and addition project was completed in September, 2000 and dedicated in November, 2000. A fund-raising effort continues, with the goal of raising an additional $1.1 million. Bob Grand ’78 is chairing the fundraising drive. The Betas are currently contacting new volunteers for each pledge class. Project cost: $2.7 million, raised to date: $789,342*. Delta Tau Delta The Delts have completed the first phase of their Partnership effort by preparing a Program Document. They selected Lamson and Condon as their architect on February 26, 2003 and on March 14 the architects and Delt alumni toured the house. At this time the Delts anticipate renovating their existing structure and not adding to the current house. The Delts are to complete their fund-raising plan by September 1, 2003. Chris Baker ’74, Don Caplinger ’57, Jim Dimos ’83 and Steve Hoffman ’85 are coordinating the facility and fundraising committees. Project cost: TBD, raised to date: $113,153.* Kappa Sigma The Kappa Sigs have completed their Program Document, and the College provided it to four architectural firms. These firms made presentations to the Kappa Sig facility committee on January 8, 2003 and the firm of Ratio Architects of Indianapolis was selected. (Ratio is the firm that designed the new Sigma Chi house and is also working with the Phi Delts.) The Kappa Sigs met with Ratio on April 12, 2003 to discuss in more detail their hopes of renovating their existing chapter house. The preliminary schematic designs are complete, and the Kappa Sigs met with the Facility Subcommittee on August 20, 2003 to disclose their renovation plans. Their fundraising plan is currently being developed. Mark Maddox ’83 chairs the fund-raising committee and Wes Zirkle ’98 chairs the facility committee. Project cost: Estimate of $4.0M, raised to date: $43,425.* Lambda Chi Alpha The Lambda Chi renovation and addition project was completed and dedicated in the Fall of 2001. Fundraising continues, but they have already passed their stated goal of $400,000. Mike Laudick ’82 and Joe Emmick ’92 coordinated the fund-raising committee. Project cost: $2.04 million, raised to date: $414,768 , not including loan of $300,000.* Phi Delta Theta The Phi Delts have completed their Program Document, and the College provided it to four architectural firms. The Phi Delt alumni group heard presentations from these firms on January 15, 2003 and selected Ratio Architects of Indianapolis. (Ratio is also working with Sigma Chi and Kappa Sigma.) The Phi Delts are exploring building a new house on the same site where they are currently located. Their fund-raising plan was approved by the Ad Hoc Committee on Fraternity Partnerships on March 8, 2003. They met with Ratio Architects on March 19, 2003 to further discuss schematic designs. On August 20, 2003, Ratio presented preliminary schematic designs to the Facility Subcommittee for a new house with a capacity of fifty-two men. This represents an increase of eight men, and this increase in capacity is currently under discussion. Mark Dill ’75, Scott Smalstig ’88 and Hugh Vandivier ’91 are coordinating fund-raising efforts. Bill Leppert ’94 and King Lumpkin ’88 are co-chairing the facility committee. Project cost: Estimate$3.9M, raised to date $680,915*. *Raised to date figures do not include the $750,000 match promised by the College to those who meet their fundraising goals. © Nancy J. Doemel, Senior Advancement Officer & Coordinator of Volunteer Services, Wabash College/ (765) 361-6092/doemeln@wabash.edu Phi Gamma Delta Phi Gamma Delta has received approval from the Ad Hoc Committee to proceed with fundraising and planning for a $3.5 million renovation. Fundraising began with a formal kickoff event in April, 2002. The Phi Gams presented their Design Documents to the Facilities Subcommittee (of the Ad Hoc Committee) on January 15 and 16, 2003. These documents were approved and the architect, Riddle Design of St. Louis, MO, (Jim Riddle ’86), received permission to proceed to the preparation of Construction Documents. Based on the approved Design Documents, the College sought an estimate from a contractor to get up-to-date costs for this project. This estimate has been received and exceeds the approved $3.5M. The Phi Gams met on April 12, 2003 and decided they would still like to proceed with the original plans to renovate and add on to the current chapter house. On August 20, 2003 the Phi Gams appeared before the Facility Subcommittee and confirmed a desire to renovate their current house. After some discussion, they agreed to consider building a new house, as this option would be less expensive than the proposed renovation. They will discuss this at their next housing corporation meeting. John Keith ’91, Craig Green ’59 and Randy Berta ‘76 chair the fundraising committee. Greg Miller ’83 is working with Jim Riddle ’86 on the facility committee. Project cost: Estimate $4.6M, raised to date $947,257 (excluding a $1 million deferred gift)*. Phi Kappa Psi The Phi Psis have completed almost all phases of the fraternity partnership process. On January 16, 2003 the fraternity selected Brandt Construction as their contractor. Schenkel Schultz is the architect for this project, and the Construction Documents are 95% complete. This project will be a renovation of the existing facility, but there will not be an addition to the house. The College has received bids from the contractor which exceeded the approved $1.8M. The Phi Psis appeared with Schenkel Schultz and Brandt Construction at the Ad Hoc Committee meeting on March 8, 2003 to discuss the increased costs. They currently are attempting to reduce the total project cost. No date has been set for the start of construction. Larry Landis ’67 and Terry Hamilton ’89 chair the fund-raising committee. Joe Klen ’97 and Dick Regnier ’51 chair the facilities committee. Project cost: Estimate $2.3M, raised to date: $389,012. Sigma Chi The new Sigma Chi house is now occupied by the active chapter; however, there are punch list items yet to be completed. It is a beautiful new structure located just west of the Delta Tau Delta house on West Wabash Avenue. Bob Russell ‘59 is chairing the Sigma Chi fund-raising effort, with assistance from Fred Ruebeck ’61, Tom Emmick ’62, Jay Fisher ’66, Rem Johnston ’55, Byron Lamm ‘79 and Herm Haffner ’77. David Olsen ‘80 and Jack Spurway ‘69 chair the facility committee. Project cost: $3.6 million; raised to date: $542,316. Tau Kappa Epsilon The Tekes met on January 20, 2003 with the Campus Services staff to explore how to initiate their role in the Fraternity Partnership process. Brad Johnson ’71, Jon Pactor ’71 and Ken Schild ‘66 will lead the Tekes’ effort as they explore whether to renovate or build new. They have prepared a Program Document and provided it to the College administration for review. A key issue for the Tekes will be the College’s perspective on their current building. At the present time, they would like to regain use of entire chapter house just for the Tekes, since it currently holds 36 independent men and 34 TKE brothers. If it is not possible to regain the full structure, the Tekes would like the College to consider allowing them to build a new, smaller chapter house. The Tekes met with College representatives and the active chapter on April 26, 2003 to discuss these issues. The next step will be to select an architect. Project cost: TBD. Theta Delta Chi The Theta Delts have expressed interest in obtaining College-owned housing. They currently rent two houses off campus. Discussion has taken place about what the College will do for the Theta Delts, but no decisions of any kind have been made. Project cost: TBD. *Raised to date figures do not include the $750,000 match promised by the College to those who meet their fundraising goals. © Nancy J. Doemel, Senior Advancement Officer & Coordinator of Volunteer Services, Wabash College/ (765) 361-6092/doemeln@wabash.edu A Message from Joe Emmick, Dean for College Advancement The quiet of summer has subsided. Students began arriving on campus last weekend and practices for soccer and football are underway. All freshmen report to campus tomorrow, and orientation runs through next week. It is great to see our students, the people who benefit most from this campaign, back for another academic year. We enjoyed a better week last week, just shy of a six-figure increase, with $96,253 in new gifts and pledges. You may note that the math does not quite add up. We adjusted the total by $13,846 due to a gift we thought was a new commitment and was instead a payment on a pledge already in the total (Note from Nancy Doemel: this is why the documentation you gather for us with each pledge is so important!) I remain pleased with and confident in the activity we have scheduled and the gifts we anticipate in the coming months. Our goal is within reach; however, we’ll need your help to ensure we get to the finish line. The need for volunteers to execute their calls, make solicitations, work with donors to create effective ways to give, and work with College staff has never been greater. As always, thanks for everything you do for Wabash College and the Campaign for Leadership.
